CBT and ERP for Pure-O

Has anyone out there received either of these treatments for mental rituals??? my compulsions are a lot less noticeable than in other OCD patients who's rituals manifest in more physical ways and I'm not entirely sure that either approach will help someone in a situation like mine. I find it hard to open up to my therapist about the intrusive thoughts and I don't know how to stop ruminating.

Hello. Im a 40 year sufferer/veteran of OCD. Ive had Pure O last 10 years -brutal. Just started CBT and it works excellently for new intrusive thoughts. My difficulty is that I doesnt help much to combat past things. So, my painful ruminating and search for the impossible and elusive truth for particular situations continue. I will pray for you. davidovergoliath

Hi there...it's me!!! <heart>

I asked Ethan Smith (on the webinars) about whether ERP would work for mental intrusive thoughts and he said absolutely. I know that if my OCD in this gets out of hand again, I'm going to seek this treatment.....

Sit with the anxiety and the feared consequences.

The anxiety will be high in the beginning.

But slowly it will get lower.

Do not interact or argue with the thoughts.

Let the thoughts be there.

Relabel the thought as an OCD thought.

The thoughts will slowly fade away.

I hope this helps.

ERP is just as effective for "covert" rituals as for physical ones. It remains the lone evidence-based treatment for OCD, and it works. Proceed with the utmost confidence.

Hello. I’m checking in mid month to make sure you’re alright. How are you ?

Frustrated with the intrusive thoughts, they've been burdensome at best. Thank you for checking in though, I hope you're okay!

As you know, I designated June my “No OCD Month”. Only medication and prayer. I have to say, I feel a lot better. Little to no ruminating. I still have some intrusive thoughts, but I am choosing not to attach significance to them. Not easy. I’ll pray for you tonight. Take courage and be strong!
