Travel Insurance to Spain with MF

Hi All,

I thought I would share my experience with finding travel insurance for Europe/Spain.

I have found that when looking for insurance single trip to Spain or annual insurance to Europe (including Spain) has not been the easiest of task - I have been to a previous supplier who declined my insurance because I was travelling to Spain - but if I went to other parts of Europe I would have been allowed to get cover, they did however point me in the direction of sites that I would be able to get quotes from as everyone should be allowed some sort of insurance. The person on the was lovely about it all but couldn't really explain why Spain?! I guess it may come down to the bills in the end if something went wrong.

The insurance premiums are not great for myself due to my medical history over the last 2 years I have MF with Non-cirrhotic Portal Vein Thrombosis and Oesophageal Varices - which I have had a bleed in August 21 (coming close to 1 year ago) so lots going off on the interior but on the exterior I look healthy - regularly attend the gym - I am always pushing myself to be the in the best health and listen to my body - no one would know my conditions, but it cost me more than a car with insurance probably would.

The point of my post is that if anyone is struggling to get insurance which I was basically limited to 3 companies from what research I did online. I was pointed in the direction of British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA) and using the Money Helpers Travel Insurance Directory - they are all regulated.

But I managed to secure annual travel insurance to Europe - all countries included - to travel as many times as I like for no longer than 45 days per trip - which based on the quotes I have been receiving if I go to Europe twice I will have saved money in doing so - so best get planning another trip :)

What I did find unfair about the questioning of all the insurance companies is that they are standard off the shelf policies and do not take into account you as a person, similar to how a car insurance policy works - date of events such as my bleed etc - if i had planned my trip a few weeks later I would not have had to declare that. Also that you have to insure the whole policy for winter sport instead of the individuals that would be partaking in such events - as myself knowing the risk of a fall could compromise me but my husband and children would be ok in that instance and they have no medical but I would push the premiums up more even when I would not want to partake.

It would be interesting to hear anyone eases experience with travel insurance.

Which insurers did you eventually use? I can find a single policy but cannot find an annual policy, which I prefer. I also have active sarcoidosis and heart disease. All companies refused annual cover. I am travelling within 14 days. Thank you for sharing.

I went with all clear in the end they are not the cheapest but I am happy with the level of cover I have got - they were the only ones that would give me annual - obviously if anything changes I have to make changes to the policy and if for some reason they are no longer able to insure me they will refund what months I have left - have you tried contacting BIBA? They find insurance companies that will insure for your needs.

Hi, I was told by a travel insurance company I used who was avanti, if anyone in your travel party has health issues to disclosure then for that person to get their own policy or all the other people in the party pays more too that's what we done 1 policy for me then the rest of family had a separate policy hope that helps anyone looking for insurance

Yes I know a few that do this too - I’ve put us all on one for the reason if I was taken ill or unable to travel due to my health and we had to cancel our trip then all the party would get a refund - some insurances would not pay out on a separate policy if the others are still fit to travel. When I did a quote without my family it was only £50 more to have them on and they get the same amount of cover as me - they could probably get one for less than this but it gives piece of mind :) - hopefully I will never use it but better to be safe x
