I am about to have it, 2 doses at least 8 weeks apart. Has anyone had it and what sort of side effects did you experience please?

I had both vaccines a couple of years ago . Other than sore arm I didn’t have side effects but my husband had upset stomach after the second dose. Still is not as bad as having shingles. Good luck.

Thank you for that. I don’t know anyone who has had this vaccine so that’s been helpful.

I had dose 1 last May, 2021. It was more of a deal than Pfizer, hurt more going in and the standard list of malaise next day. My Dr advised to get it Friday to keep the weekend avail for recovery.

I was/am on HU, I don't know that has any effect.

I read that its "adjuvant" is one reason for the reaction.

i had the live vax years ago, they say you need the new dead one, and MPN's shouldn't get live vaxs anyway.

I just got 3rd dose of Pfizer and Dr suggested to wait a while for my 2nd of Shingles. In US we can go up to 6 months between shingles doses.

It is the adjuvant- I learned this during my go round. But the way, it’s the same adjuvant the Novovax Covid shot uses so frankly I won’t be taking that one if offered :).

Thanks for the confirmation. I think the current plan for Novovax is sell it outside the US or UK so we may not see it anyway.

The non live vaccine I had was Shingrix and the travel nurse bought it in for me. My second dose is in the fridge at the doctors for me in 8 weeks time. So far only a bit of a sore arm!

Is this Shingrix? I never have vaccine reactions, but I did with this one. Took it a few years back when it was newer. Many of my rheumie’s patients had reactions ranging from hospitalization (one person) to flu aches (me) for 5 days. For the second shot she had us do a round of prednisone. I remember being so surprised as I don’t have medicine reactions. That said, my parents who took it and others I knew were 100% fine. They didn’t include AI folks in the trials - my rheumie reported all this to the company at the time. She’s from Stanford/US. Ps. As I noted in a reply above, it’s the adjuvant that causes issues for some (though like I said, I’m the only one in my social group, but many had issues in my rheumie’s practice) - I learned this during my go round. It’s the same adjuvant the Novovax Covid shot uses so I won’t be taking that one if offered :).

Also keep in mind it’s not perfect, my mom still got shingles 2 years later. But, def worth it!

Yes it is Shingrix. I only have a slightly sore arm. Normally with vaccine I don’t have any reaction, not even Covid. But happy to have it as at least I will have some immunity

Hi all, I looked at this a few years ago and it seemed like Shingrix wasn't available on the NHS then, only privately from a clinic in London at the cost of about £500. Has that now changed? I really hope it has as my mum got shingles when she was 80 and suffered with the pain for 13 years! Really interested to know more. Many thanks

Hi GillYes it is available free of charge from your GP.

My records came up with a note saying Caution as I have ET and take hydroxycarbamide and I told the nurse doing my flu jab that I need the non live vaccine and told her the name Shingrix and she told me she would investigate and the surgery bought vaccine for 2 patients and I had my first dose yesterday.

It costs £440 to have it privately!!

You may need to push it with your GP. I actually changed named doctors at my surgery as my previous doc would not put me on the vulnerable list last year!!

I believe in being pro active and having control over my condition. I am keeping an eye on the booster vaccine situation as I want the 3rd dose as soon as I can.

Good luck

That's brilliant, thank you! I will get on to the docs and hopefully I will be able to get it.

This may help you if your GP isn't aware that Shingrix is now available in the UK - it appears that it is only in the last month that it's been available:

I phoned to book the flu jab yesterday and asked about the non-live Shingles vaccination. which is now available on the NHS.

I have ET and get Angina, and had Shingles very painfully shortly after my second Covid vaccination. I do not want to Shingles again. The receptionist enquired and phoned back later in the day, they had it in stock and I could have the first dose today.

I was there bright and early, the nurse had the pack of Shingrix, and we went through the check list for the Patient Group Directive, which allows medicines to be administered, and then she said that I could not have it because I was not 70. Neither the practice manager nor the GP could be of help.

I am a little bit irked. I have had angina off and on all day.

I have contacted my Haematologist’s secretary to see if a letter from her would help.

Later,

Shingrix Vaccine cannot be given until twelve months after an attack of Shingles.

Yes l had both doses of Shingrix about 2 years ago and had no side effects
