Astrazeneca vaccine and platelet rise

Turfbeg profile image
22 Replies

About 2 weeks after having my first astrazeneca vaccination I had my regular (3 monthly ) blood test. I have PV and have taken hydroxycarbamide and 75mg aspirin daily for over 4 years. In all that time my platelets numbers have been ok but this time they have risen. This might well be coincidence but I am wondering if anyone else has had a blood test fairly soon after a covid vaccination and if so were there any changes in the resuts? Many thanks in anticipation of replies and keep safe. Turfbeg

Will be interesting to see if there are any others who have experienced this. Theoretically, someone could see an uptick in platelet levels as an immune response (reactive thrombocytosis). What is interesting is that there are some reports of a rare reaction to the COVID vaccine - thrombocytopenia - the opposite of thrombocytosis.health.com/condition/infect...

Interesting outcomes it seems might be possible? Fascinating!

Hence, someone like myself who suffers from a very high Platelet regime, possibly could benefit from a reduction in Platelets...

However, I would first be wanting to know exactly how that might transpire, before I was to put my hand up etc...

Naturally, I too am watching this space very closely...

Best wishes guys...

Steve

I have ET and I’m worried I will get sick if I have the injection

It is all a judgement call. My judgement is that getting COVID would be worse than getting the vaccine. We each have to weigh the risks for ourselves. I had no reaction to the first dose of Moderna. I get my second dose on April 3. Will see how that one goes.

I am not willing to continue with the restrictions on activities indefinitely. I am ready to be done with social distancing! If enough of us get the vaccine and we hang in there for a few more months with the restrictions, we can get things back to normal.

Ultimately, quality of life matters more than its length to me. I make all of my medical decisions based on that premise. My judgement is that the vaccine, despite any uncertainties, offers me the best chance for a higher QOL and a longer life. We each have to make that judgement for ourselves.

All the best.

I had my first Pfizer vaccine 17 days ago and today my platelets were the highest they’ve ever been at 697. Not sure it is significant as they have fluctuated between 580-660 over the past 18 months.

Hi,

I had a blood test last week, 5 days after I received the first dose of the AZ vaccine. I get my results this afternoon so will update you then. I am ET Jak2+.

Hi, results were unchanged from my previous few tests.

I am Jak 2 and my platelets have gone down by 100 after the jab . I have been as high as 1400 but now just below 1000.

I had my Covid jab 6 days before my bloods were done. Platelets were 185 which is low for me but my white cell count and neuts were up on previous counts which I figured was an immune response to the jab. Tina.

Could this immune response and subsequent increase in platelet count be correlated with cerebral blood clots in some, a small number of, cases ?

As Karol_Rua is asking, it is curious that there have also been some rare occurrences of thrombosis following the Astra-Zeneca vaccine. There is no evidence that it is related, but much is unknown. I think we will all just to have to watch and see.

I got my Moderna Vaccine on April 3. Platelets on Jan11 = 701 - on April 8 = 564. That is the lowest they have been in a while. The vaccine or totally unrelated - who knows?

in reply tohunter5582

Thrombosis with the Astra Zeneca and thrombocytopenia (as you also mentioned above) after the Pfizer which could be the cause of the first reported death in the US, due to severe blood abnormalities

Which goes to show that nothing is without risk. The jury is still out on this issue, but I would still rather take my chances with the vaccine than mu chances without. I am very sure I do not want to be part of the "How people with PV do with COVID" data base.

Hope everyone is able to access their choice of vaccine (for those who do) ASAP.

I have ET and am on Hydrea and 75mg Aspirin. I had first dose of AstraZeneca Vaccine beginning of February. I had my regular blood checks, two weeks after the vaccine. My bloods have been stable but this time my platelets were raised, also my white cells and neutrophils. My haematologist said it wasn't enough to be of concern and hasn't changed my dosage. I am guessing that the vaccine has altered it.

I have ET jak2+ & my platelets were checked one week after first Pfizer vaccine & my platelets were ok at 470. Only change was my blood pressure was a little high, which has never happened to me before. Dr didn’t seemed concerned.

Had the AstraZeneca and bloods done four weeks later - they were 444 which I’m pretty sure is the lowest they’ve been in the three years since diagnosis (highest around 550) ... so it is interesting

Hi turfbeg,I had the AZ vaccine last Thurs 11th and a full blood count was done Mon 15th so I will post once I hear the results. TBH I was suspecting my platelets had increased due to other symptoms I'd been experiencing in the week preceding the vaccine so it would be hard to know for sure what impact, if any, the AZ vaccine had on these.

I wonder if bloods were checked more frequently they would show changes after every cold, flu jab, or fall?

I received my first AZ dose on 11/02. Blood test on 16/02 showed platelet count of 175 (I'm on 45 ml Pegasys weekly). Another blood test, 02/03 showed 150 platelet count.

Yes I had the AstraZeneca vaccine and my platelets went up. I take 3 HU daily and aspirin as well. I do have to add that my platelets had started going up prior to having the vaccine, so it could be co-incidence or a double whammy.

I had Astra Zeneca & 3 weeks later had my usual blood test , my platelets had gone up for first time in years .I wondered if it was because of covid vaccine x
