hello Aojai, before taking any vitamins or supplements you must discuss it with your haematologist. Best wishes, Maz

Hello , my haem said i can take vitamn c which im taking a capsule water soluable a day vit C and said i can takr kitchen turmeric chop 2 3 pieces shred and boil it and drink with milk as curcumin is absorbed with fat only , but the amount of kitchen turmeric i consume has very very less amount of curcumin therefore im asking for the caps which has higher curcumin extracted , organic turmeric well have to consume lots which we cant , ive read some Avaa labs curcumin since many brands in mkt looking for a genuinely effective one .

If fellow group members can shed light if the caps with piperine are good to go or u need to drink capsule with milk ?? For absorption ?

P.s. theres no harm in taking vit C and turmeric , im et 75 mg daily aspirin plt 6-900

Hi Aojai, I have ET Jak2+ and have taken Aava Labs curcumin with piperine for around 3 years. My platelet count has been stable for most of that time and my haematologist has reduced my hydroxycarbamide dose.

Curcumin is not readily bioavailable. It needs help to pass into the blood stream. Some formulations do this with peperin (black pepper extract). The formulation my Integrative Medicine doc recommends is called CurcuWIN. Various brands use this, but the cheapest is at WalMart - Spring Valley brand. Be sure to get the right one if you use this brand as they have multiple Turmeric/Curcumin blends.

Please do have realistic expectations re. curcumin. It has not had any impact on thrombocytosis/erythrocytosis for me. It is, however, a very effective anti-inflammatory agent. I started it for treating osteoarthritis. it worked better than any NSAID I ever took. Those of us with MPNs are prone to systemic inflammation that can cause a host of problems. Finding effective ways to manage inflammation is very important to quality of life.

DO pay attention to the fact that anything that can help you can also hurt you. Is something is biologically active enough to make a change in your body, then the change can go both ways. Curcumin is slightly blood thinning. It can potentiate aspirin and other blood thinners. It is very important to let your docs know that you are taking it (or any other supplement). I consult with an Integrative Medicine doc as I have found that most docs do not have a strong base of knowledge re. the impact of complimentary health approaches like curcumin. This doc has been very helpful in looking at issues related to systemic inflammation.

Hope that helps.

Hunter, that’s good advice. Also be aware curcumin while it is a JAK2 inhibitor it’s also an iron binder.

Aojai, curcumin will prevent absorption of iron in the gut from food so if you use a curcumin supplement it should be used between meals. Curcumin may enhance aspirin's blood thinning so talk to your doctor before using any supplement.

Many supplements interact with medications as well as other supplements. Most anything that is anti-inflammatory seems to have blood-thinning effects as well. Fish Oil is actually contraindicated if you take aspirin due to its pronounced potentiation of blood thinning effect. That is why it is so important to consult with a doc who understands the impact these supplements can have. Not all docs have this expertise, and some tend to shy away from anything they do not know. That is why I see an Integrative Medicine specialist.

Garlic clove also has allicin which has anti plt effect and reduces plt stickiness , we cant control the over production of plts but these known remedies might help for apoptosis ( cell death)
