Folate

Hi , I have ET, blood tests have shown I am low in folate. I had the tests done by medicheck as I have been having erratic thyroid results and wanted my vitamins and minerals checked. Thyroid uk say its important that folate vit D and B vitamins are optimal to enable thyroxine to be absorbed but I have just read that folate can increase platelets which is obviously not desirable. Does anyone have experience of this? I will of course check with Haem when I can but am concerned if I can't take folate that my thyroid issue won't be improved and It is is causing me issues.

Maybe just try foods high in folate. It’s really important you don’t take supplements without your heamo’s consent. Good luck

From 5 hemos, and many other specialists, only one knew a little bit about vitamins here in Austria. Not only that, they either sneared or said, “I’ve do medicine, not that stuff”. It is very true, that vitamines, minerals and other supplements should be carefully looked act, because they can cross with each other or with our meds!! It is better to go to a functional doctor or any other doctor, who really knows about supplements and their interactions!! Ie. Garlic, selenium, vit C, etc can take our ET meds out of our body! I found out that the half life of my Anagrelid is 1.3 hours, therefore I wait 4 hours after taking it, to do my liver detox and antioxidants and 3 hours before I take my next Anagrelid. It’s a balancing act.

Thanks. i have a lot of symptons which fit folate defiency and as it is found in foods I don't really see the difference in taking a naturally sourced supplement. Anything to feel better , the things you mentioned vit c and selenium are also found in many foods. Confusing to know what to do. If ypu are deficient in something important

I have 500 pages of notes on this stuff since I started studying last June. Even foods high in certain antioxidants like garlic, etc, I eat them long after and before my meds. Folate is great from red beets, avocados, nuts, etc. Don’t do too much broccoli or dark leafy greens. They have lots of Vit K and they can work like fertilizer for the thrombos as can papaya and sweet potato. A god holistic doctor is priceless. She does much more for me than my hemo. She’s cleaned up so many other health problems and I live a much healthier and balanced life. I also have gotten rid of all GMOs, pesticides, fertilizers, chemicals, non organic cosmetics and synthetic anything out of my body snd home. The difference in my whole family is huge. The environment is also a tiny bit cleaner because of us. I wish you a cure for your thyroid, not just symptom reduction with pills, which is what they did to me and most others. 🙂

Gosh that’s awful. I once asked my Haemo if i could take b12 supplements. She said not until your bloods come back. If you are low on it you need a prescription. Also I am am low on heamoglobin. I must not take iron tablets because my body is storing too much of it.

Yes. These are the complications that we normal mortals don’t know about. Supplements can work miracles, but in some situations cause problems. If your Ferritin (iron storage) is full, you should be ok. I am a born anaemic. Beta thalassemia. (Typical of greeks). My HG, RBC are always low and their shape weird and small. I Always have enough iron, since we Greeks eat black olives, Auberginen, etc. With this anaemia, I’m resistant to malaria. Hehehe.

A few months ago, I started eating 1-2 small, rare, organic liver steaks a week and my RBCS got into the normal range for the first time in my life! Iron stayed same.

Holistic doctors still know more. They should work hand in hand with the hematologists!

Yep there must be a chemical reason for me to have ample ferritin (337) and low heamoglobin (102).

Surely it would benefit a lot of patients with a range of illnesses especially as we know cancer drugs cause low heamo. So I now know if I win the lottery I would fund research into just that lol.

I would fund holistic research, instead of pouring money into more chemicals production. They really get to the core of things. It’s the extreme satiation of chemicals and pollutants that are mostly responsible for our health in the first place. I wish both sides would work together, but there’s no money to be made in fixing someone’s diet or adding natural supplements. 😕 of course, when our health is on fire, we shoot with whatever will save us. Wishing you a great June! Anag

Hi Jodary, Yes, yr dr is right above the thyroid. Iodine is also very important. If you have Hashimoto, the only way to really diagnose correctly, is to check the TPO and other antibodies, even if the T3, T4 and TSH are normal. It took 20 years of suffering until I was properly diagnosed and got help. BUT, the doctor never checked my Vit D, Iodine, B Vits or Selenium!!! Careful, Vit D must be between 60-80 to be optimal. 30 or 40 is a definite! After 20 years on T4, I finally got my supplements right, with a wonderful doctor’s guidance and she finally change to bio-identical thyroid hormone and I was able to reduce my intake of T4 by 30% over 1 year! My body and mind are both much happier! Stay away from sweet potato and papaya. Regularly eaten, they made my platelets explode. I do take folate (little). Allis ok on that front. But everyone reacts differently. Please make changes one at a time, else you can’t keep track of what’s bothering you. Cheers! Anag
