I know that this subject has been discussed in the past on the forum but felt it worth raising again with details of my own recent experience.
I work in insurance and until I joined this forum, fairly recently, had never considered that MPNs were covered within Critical Illness Life Assurance Plans.
Having a Life Assurance plan that included critical illness myself, I spoke to a contact who worked for the life office I had taken my cover out with and, after providing him with basic details of my condition, he spoke with the claims team and arranged for them to phone me.
In a brief telephone conversation the claims adviser asked several questions relating to my ET, such as date of diagnosis, tests undergone and medication taken and informed me that he would write to my Consultant for additional clarification.
Within five weeks I had a call back from the claims adviser informing me that my claim was successful and within a further two weeks I received full payment, including a repayment of premiums paid.
At a time when I have had to reduce my working hours, due to fatigue since commencing Hydroxy, this has come as a welcome surprise and I suggest that any other members of the forum who think they have critical illness cover contact the claims team of the provider. The whole process was very straightforward and the claims team at Aviva were really supportive.

I really doubted that ET qualified as a critical illness but having read some of the previous posts and an ABI statement I decided to make enquiries. The whole process was very straightforward and the Aviva claims team were really supportive.
With new members joining the forum all the time it is important that people are aware that they may have policies that they are able to make a valid claim on.
That's great news 👏👏👏. I can't figure out how this works ... as my claim with Aviva just got rejected. Thanks to your stories and forum members support I got a copy of ABI statment and mailed it back to Aviva just yesterday. 😞
Sorry to hear this. As far as I understand, although I am no medical expert, ET and PV are now regarded as malignant cancers by the ABI and as such classed as critical illnesses.
I took out my original policy in 2001 and then replaced it with a new one, without the need for further medical underwriting, in 2016. I was diagnosed with ET in 2004.
I just gave some basic details of my condition, ET Jak2+, over the phone to the claims team and they then contacted my current Consultant for further details. I then got a phone call from them a few weeks later saying that the claim was accepted.
Hopefully the ABI statement will get a result for you. Keep at it and let us know how you get on.
Congratulations! Delighted you pursued it and won out. That original (and elusive) ABI Statement which made ET and PV eligible for claims was introduced following the WHO reclassification of MPNs as cancers. The sticking point was (and sometimes continues to be by those who - still - haven’t read that ABI directive is that MPNs are not cancerous tumours). It’s unbelievable that a decade on insurers are still giving MPNers a hard time over CIC.
Hi, I've just realised I have a policy with Aviva. Noticed a payment going out on my bank statement, so gave them a call. Now waiting details of the policy. I may come back to you for words of wisdom. It's weird, been paying them for years and had long forgotten what it was for.
