Pneumonia jab

Searched the archives but mixed messages?

Some say we can’t have it since live vaccine and others have had it no problem.

Met a couple of very healthy people yesterday who are recovering from this latest flu strain, said never been so ill. One of them, a doctor, said real risk of developing into Pneumonia.

Thanks

Hi Paul,

I was given the Pneumonia vaccine along with the flu this year. I was a bit light headed for a day or so afterwards but no real issue.

Personally I am happy to have received the vaccine, and as it lasts a number of years I will have some protection against what can be a very serious illness.

See here. nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinati...?

I'be had it - it's lifetime protection - no side effects at all.

If offered. I believe you can have it, the only one that is live is the shingles jab, but that is only offered to the over 70s,

I also believe the pneumonia vaccine is not live and therefore safe. In the US, they recommend the shingles vaccine at much younger than 70 but because it’s a live vaccine I’m told not to get it. Katie

From NHS ukwebsite.

“ The pneumococcal vaccine is thought to be around 50-70% effective at preventing pneumococcal disease. Both the PPV and the PCV are inactivated or "killed" vaccines and don't contain any live organisms. They can't cause the disease against which they protect.“

I had it years ago when first diagnosed prescribed by my MPN consultant - always best to get any protection possible!

Always had it since first diagnosed with MF, and every year post stem cell transplant.

Thanks for all your replies. I had it this morning, not a live vaccine.

I asked about the Shingles jab, Doc said couldn’t have it once started Interferon.
