I am new to this group, but wanted to let people on this site know that I take an antihistamine, (Cetirizine Hydrochloride 10mg ) one a day, I now find I get far fewer migraine headaches or attacks. It helped me, it may help you too. You can get it over the counter in lots of shops not just chemist shops (from Aldi to Wilco).
Allergy relief helped me: I am new to... - National Migraine...
Allergy relief helped me
I take Clonidine Hydochloride and I wonder if it may have similar properties in it. I take two twice a day. I still get niggling headaches that don't go without taking a Naramig but since taking the Clonidine I haven't had a full blown migraine.
Thanks for posting this Lesley. I haven't heard of antihistamines being used as a migraine preventative. I take 100mg of B2 three times a day which has helped with the severity but not the frequency. It's worth a try if it's easy to obtain
Hi I don't find it helps that much, but I have to say I've not tried counting the migraines when I take ceterizine and not. I've def had migraines taking them though..
Maybe it would be worth counting them then - at least you will know if it helps and if to keep taking them everyday?
Hi there, I've also found the anti-histamine Piriton (chlorphenamine maleate) to be helpful for some of my migraines - but maybe because it knocks me out & I'm asleep within 20 minutes so I'm less aware of the madness going on in my brain!
Original formula Syndol also had an anti-histamine in - which was brilliant. Their website (syndol.co.uk/your-questions) says:
What is doxylamine succinate?
A. Doxylamine succinate is a non-habit forming antihistamine that blocks certain natural substances (histamine, acetylcholine) that your body makes. The lack of histamine and acetylcholine causes drowsiness and can aid sleep.
They've now removed doxylamine succinate from their current formulation of Syndol. But you can still buy it on its own. It works really well as a muscle relaxant and sleep-inducer.
I'm not suggesting this is a great solution for migraine overall... but for me, it's been a good tool to have in the drug toolbox along with triptans, amitriptyline, nurofen, etc.
