Could some please enlighten me on the affects of taking nortriptyline?
I’ve read that it’s not effective in treating pains. However, I need help with functional heartburn associated with anxiety and depression.
Has anyone experienced or is experiencing FH? What has been or is your current treatment?
I’m currently talking nortriptyline, it’s my first day and it’s horrible. I’m very angry, agitated, my mood is hell, sleepy and i feel really irritable. Hopefully it should go away?
I’m not looking forward to using this treatment over the next several weeks. It’s similar to Amitriptyline and didn’t do anything for me expect experience terrible effects. I’m wondering if I’m going to go down the same route with nortriptyline?
I also read an American paper that it can help ease IBS?!
Doctors can’t work out or even help me further to shift this constant reflux symptoms. My dentist has never heard a case like it either.
Please help.

You need to allow time, upwards of five weeks for the medication to settle, you need patience. Some medications can affect or cause an upset tummy although This should settle given time, it sounds like your problems are Anxiety and stress, for example and that could cause IBS, your GP would need to confirm that. However because of hospital referrals, including the Dentist can be problematic. I have had several referrals and staff seem to be concerned having us on wards or waiting rooms so your GP will however be able to refer you. Allow time for you to settle, see how you get on
A gp told me to come off it. With just 10mg and I reacted terribly after one day, don’t think it will improve. It’s similar to Amitriptyline, which I was on last year. I got to 30mg and reacted the same as the north at 10mg. Felt awful today. Couldn’t deal with it for next few weeks. His advised to see a dietitian.
I have taken Amitriptyline for about thirty years, I take the drug for a side effect regards nerve damage. I am seventy and I had to reduce the drug several years ago and again more recently because of age lowering the dose from 80 to forty last year, no problem I also had to reduce my AD medications by 50% and medications were not a problem to reduce. It sounds like you are on minimal or medium dose. I also had to reduce Opiates by 50% and again no problems I was trained in Pain Clinic how to control medications and now I manage my pain relief increasing and lowering the dose as and when required. Pain Medications
Most AD drugs have the same side effects and what suits one patient will not suit another one, so it is difficult to really advise. You need to allow five weeks to lower some of the side effects. All I can suggest is be patient
I’ve come off for now. I should not reacted to the drug the way I did. I do agree can take a few weeks for effects to subside but don’t think I can trust myself to continue with it. I came of Amitriptyline last year and that was horrible for 2 weeks. They are both not great drugs . Everyone is affected differently and mine is specifically for functional heartburn. Not sure if it’s the right drug since Amitriptyline didn’t work after 7 months of using it. Something should have changed. Thank you Bob
