Hello Kay23

Thanks for your message. It sounds as if you are having a difficult time. Can you tell us more about your circumstances? Have you recently started to live alone?

Can you tell us about how you are feeling? What is your age?

Our members have a lot of different life experiences so may be able to help.

We look forward to hearing more.

Best wishes

Hi Kay,

I’m going through a divorce and will soon be on my own. I’m 35 so not young but the thought is scary!! As I struggle with my mental health I feel living alone will not be easy.

How old are you?

Tony

Hi Kay23

I have lived on my own for long periods at a time - 3 to 4 years, and then I have lived in shared houses etc.

There are disadvantages to both - it can depend on what your mental state is, and if you have a condition then have you been diagnosed and do you understand the triggers?

Advantages to living on your own include freedom to come and go as you please, peace and quiet depending on neighbours, and not having to live up to anyone's expectations. You have unlimited free time to indulge yourself in a hobby or pastime of your choosing.

Disadvantages are increasing apathy, tendency to live off fast food, health declines, noone to talk to, introspection.

I coped with my more recent periods living alone by taking up a creative hobby, but what I achieved was substandard without feedback from others, and the poor home life left me in not the right state of mind to do my best.

The ideal solution is company of other people - you can live alone ok no problems, but you can find company elsewhere - online is good, or local clubs groups etc, just try to make contact with people.

I am now living in a shared house - it is better but I am still essentially alone, as I have to keep my mental health issues to myself.

So don't stress too much about living on your own, there are ways to deal with it, and then you also have the advantages as mentioned above.

Hope that helps a little!

I am 19 and I have been living on my own since I was 17. My mental health has always been bad even when I lived at my mums I’ve always had depression. I moved out because things were just too much constant arguing.

But now I’m struggling with money, to pay my bills and constantly just thinking why me and feeling sorry for myself. I just feel so down it’s unbelievable tbh I feel like I don’t want to be an adult yet i want someone to look after me cos I feel like I’m just not strong enough to deal with any of this :(
