When I type in on line ‘mood swings lasting a few hours’ borderline personality disorder is something that popped up straight away, at my wits end I read through the symptoms and they are almost 100% me and explain how I’m feeling should I bring this up with my therapist or not? I know looking shit up online is frowned apon but I can’t do this anymore. One of my main symptoms r the mood swings and self injury when I panic or get sad I want to kill myself I though of at least 30 ways I could do this.

Hi there,

I know it is a temptation to look things up on the internet and self-diagnose, but it is not encouraged. Why? Because the symptoms may relate to other conditions, and to be honest, unless you are a medical expert/healthcare professional, you could miss something important. It also feeds into your anxieties and can make them worse. By all means, mention your symptoms to your therapist, but unless they are a medical professional e.g. psychiatrist, or doctor, who can run specific tests, prescribe the appropriate medications or treatment, then, it can be a bit risky diagnosing yourself. You may well be right in your assumptions, but I think it would be better initially, to discuss this with your GP and take it from there.

Low mood and depression is a common feature in about 30% of IBS sufferers, and treating with SSRI anti-depressants, relaxation techniques, and psychological therapies such as CBT can be helpful.

Hope this helps. Keep in touch.

Hiya, As someone who has been diagnosed with BPD, I was able to access specific group work support with a psychologist. The work was based on Marsha linehams ( think that how her name is spelt) book.

I found this helpful. That said I agree with your 1st reply. Speak with a Dr you feel comfortable with, I'm not a fan of labels usually but my BPD one was helpful to me. Learning I wasn't a bad human being, just someone who has been suffering from the things that life has thrown at me. I still get depressed and need to remind myself not to be helpless and hopeless. I do have skills I can use to improve how I'm feeling or to know my feelings will change. Good luck with your journey and take care. Love, light and peace
