I have two grandsons who have autism. One is severely disabled, with multiple health problems. He is in a wheel chair, and mostly non-verbal. Though, as a teen, he has learned to say a few very short sentences. We believe that he is able to understand more than he can express.
My other grandson, with autism, is high functioning. Someone just meeting him may not recognize he has a problem. I won't go into the many symptoms of autism that he displays. He presents a different set of problems than the one with more serious difficulties.
I can sympathize with what you face everyday. When my one grandson was little, his mother would use puppets to play with him and encourage speech. Children with autism require much more patience and need more interaction with others than the typical child.
There is a website that may be of interest to you. It provides parents and caretakers with tools needed to care for their child. The site covers all age groups and those on the autism spectrum.
