someone mentioned to me the other day that if you take overdoses/ severe depression then you can be sacked from your job if you work with children or vulnerable adults - is this true even if when you are at work you do a good job and take sick leave/ annual leave when you are ill?

You need to speak to an employment lawyer, trade union official or CAB to get correct answer.

If depressed/mentally Ill you should've protected against unfair dismissal etc

Contact ACAS for advise. There are rules about discrimination at work and also rules regarding mental health as well.
