Hi went to the doctors a while back but they referred me to an alcohol place but I don't have a problem with drinking. I told them that I needed help and I was suffering with depression and insomnia but they offered no real help. I believe there's more to how I feel, a lot of my family suffer from mental health.

Hi Pez. Sorry to hear you are struggling
Is there nowhere you can self refer yourself to? I live in cornwall and have outlook south west and you refer yourself online or by telephone they'll then call you to arrange an appointment where they discuss with you your symptoms then go through with you what treatment they think is best (not medicacation wise) eg. Counselling, CBT, sleep clinics etc. Then I think they can contact your doc to tell them that tjey believe you need medical help aswell in the form of...tablets, tests, referrals to a mental health team etc. This is something you could go to aswell as the alcohol group if needs be or instead of, I guess you can discuss that with them to see what their opinion is if you wanted.
Do you know if there is anything like this in your area? Or you could ask the docs if there is anywhere? Often there is posters for this kind of thing in the waiting room also.
Hope this is of some use, may save time waiting for the doc to get on board with how you're actually feeling and the help you really need!

Hello,Pezz,in general the first advice one gives sufferers is to talk to their GP, honestly and holding nothing back. However GPs also suffer much stress ,can become depressed and not very good at giving help.
You definitely, very definitely need to start over with a different GP and must make a considerable effort to do this as your current GP is ,hopefully temporarily, unable to be of any help to you. This fortunately is unusual but it does happen.
I'm sorry to hear you have other family members who suffer but it is important you keep your concentration totally on your own health at the moment and how you feel. Mental health problems affect everyone very differently and don't assume that what you observe in others in your family will necessarily apply to you.

Well at least you've found an outlet here where you can express yourself and share your feelings , I'm sorry I haven't replied sooner I've been out of circulation for a moment , do continue to share with us your feelings
Hi I think the health services are so unhelpful that they force you to help yourself. Example referring you to a service you don't need.
Have you tried the mindfulness phone apps? They can help with relaxation and help you with insomnia. Also exercising can help too.
Hope it works out for you.
