Denial works by DISTORTING the mind. So why is denial called a self-defense mechanism? It should be called a self-harm mechanism.

Sometimes distortion of the mind through denial is essential if we are to live happy, productive lives.   We all do it to a greater or lesser extent,  so in that sense it is a self-defence mechanism.  x

I have understood denial as a self defence mechanism to protect the mind from pain, and as Bev says to ensure a level of happiness.  We all engage in some level of distortion but some people take it to the extreme and rather than developing self awareness (however painful that might be at times) project blame for their own shortcomings onto others.  I'll be interested in what others think.
