Diazepam for sleep.

My doctor prescribed Diazepam for me to help me sleep. I took my first one last night and had a lousy night. I had the most awful nightmare and woke up , finally got back to sleep again but feel very anxious today.I don't know if I just had a bad night or if the diazepam had something to do with it. Not sure I want to take another one. Has anyone any thoughts on this?? Thanks.

I've never used sleeping pills, but I'd guess that, as with any medication, it takes time for it to get into your system and work at its best?

Hi jeffju,

I was on diazepam about seven months ago after sleepless nights due to psychosis. I was only on it for a week, but I had good nights of sleep while on them in spite of psychotic symptoms. I'm not entirely sure, and my perspective is subjective, but it could be that your body needs time to adjust. Although I was unaffected in the way you describe, and had no nightmares. It could also be that the dream was nothing to do with the diazepam - (I'm just going by my own personal experience experience). If you're really worried I would speak to a doctor.

Hope I helped!

I would much rather have Diazepam than some other sleepers and have never had a bad experience on them, infact they're very similar to valium and should calm your nerves rather than heighten them so id give them another go (maybe the nightmare was induced from having a proper nights sleep; do you frequently dream otherwise?). Although I know GPs generally don't like to give you them for along period of time especially if you have depressive symptoms as they can be quite addictive so id look for a more long term method depending on your sleeping habits, maybe change to zopiclone (a sleeper i was on for a while which i got on with fine) or even better what gangaiwar said try to find something to help natural sleep like herbal tea or something. Its just a case of finding what suits you and like lucy34 said you may need time for your body to get used to the meds. best wishes & good luck :) keira-mae x

Thanks for all your replies. I am looking at more natural ways of trying to sleep but will also give the daizepam another go. Your support is really appreciated.
