Nasal / Sinus problems and Bad Smell?

I just wanted to ask about this, as had pain in the nose/cold only on the right side, (which has since gone) all round the eyes, and top of the nose, which I am guessing is Sinusitis?

The odd thing is, is that all I can smell is what can only be described as 'cow sh*t' whenever I blow my nose, or sometimes inside it, just breathing normally?!

I am sure the mucus coming from my nose has this smell and only I can smell it day to day!

I have seen my GP who has said that this is a Sinus infection, and has given me a prescription of Doxycycline Anitbiotics to clear this up. After a week its still here.

I did show him that I had various nasal sprays to get to the route of the problem, all brand named for Sinusitis, but all contained Oxymetazoline hydrochloride. (which can have a reaction if taken prolonged).

The mucus is a mxiture of colours, from Brown toffee, some redness, sometimes yellow, then clear

Its as if there is something (mucus) rocking back and forth at the top of the nose that I cannot shift, that moves fwd and back, with sniffing, snorting to try and get it to move! very annoying!

I should point out that my general smell and taste are unaffected.

And i've found that taking a small Loratidine Allergy tablet does clear this from running, but wonder if this is masking the problem or if I can take Loratidine long term?

Anyone else experience this, with getting a horrible smell in the nose, and sinusitis pain/nose running?

(I have stopped all Nasal sprays now due to possible side effects)

Thank you

Have you tried Sterimar. It’s a saline nasal spray. No drugs or chemicals. Works for me.

I shall try this, as I can see it on Amazon. I am guessing either the Rhinitus/Sinusitis spray or the Allergy spray?

I used the plain one.

Ok thanks, did you have the same symptoms as me? Smell? trapped mucus and soreness?

Bacterial infections can cause a bad smell, so if

The redness is probably a little blood and brown color might be blood that had started to dry (but I'm not a doctor, so really I'm not sure). The inflammation might be causing some bleeding, but it's also likely that it's from all the nose blowing.

There are some nasty germs going around, and a viral infection can pave the way for a secondary bacterial infection.

I've got nothing to add for treatment. They usually heal on their own after a few weeks. However, I've known some people who had a persistent sinus infection (lasting longer than 6 months), including one married couple that both had it for over a years and had to try 3+ antibiotics to get rid of it.

My kids and I all had one virus after another from the week before Thanksgiving through the first week of January...1½ months of boogers!
