Finasteride

Taking this for benign enlarged prostate after side effects for blood pressure tablets were too severe.

Now side effects for Finasteride are kicking in after only a couple of days - sleeplessness, anxiety, hot flushes and not generally feeling quite with it.

Has any one else had side effects and do they eventually wear off?

I was recommended to take this, but after looking up side effects, some of which linger after discontinuing, decided to avoid. Best look at procedures to sort out an enlarged prostate of which there are quite a few. Side effects of finasteride:

Thank you for that. Strangely today for the first time I have no side effects.

My doctor tells me that surgery can not be considered until medication trials are exhausted and that there are problems associated with procedures.

Are you in the UK or somewhere else? I'm surprised that you have been told to try medications first before being eligible for surgery. I had Urolift, which has not worked and am now looking at Rezum (trying to avoid a TURP which can sometimes have serious side effects, although considered the 'gold standard' for BPH.

I’m in the UK.

GP told me that if the waiting lists for consultations with urologists are so long that if he referred me he’d be told to try medication first.

Sorry to hear that urilift didn’t work: I’d hoped it was the panacea.

Finasteride shouldn't be on the market because of its side effects including after use is discontinued (post finasteride syndrome). If you have no side effects, you're lucky as the % of those reported to be suffering is wrong.

Thank you . I’ll take a closer look.

I was put on Finasteride when I was diagnosed with benign enlarged prostate after I suffered an Abdominal Aeortic Aneurysm. I had the same issues as yourself talked to the doctor who changed me to Tamulosin and have been on it 8 years with no bother.

Thanks for your reply.

I started on Tamulosin before using Finasteride but for me the Tamulosin side effects were terrible.

I’m now eight days in on Finasteride and side effects have largely worn off🤞.

I'm in the UK

I'm on both tamsulosin (3years) and finasteride (2 weeks) no side effects from tamsulosin except lack of ejaculated and similar with finasteride. I'm not experiencing side effects other than those. If required I can get Viagra on prescription.

I seem to be one of the lucky ones. I've been on Finasteride for a few years now without any problem. It is a hormonal treatment, so maybe your symptoms are due to getting used to it. It can take a few months to have full therapeutic effect. Check with your prescriber as to whether it's best to persist with it. I've avoided surgery and also use intermittent urinary catheters. Maybe you can ask if this (it's called Clean Intermittent Self- Catheterisation = CISC for short) is an option?

Thanks for this.

Hopefully that will remain the case.
