Severe bloating on Mirena

Hi, I’ve just had Mirena fitted as part of HRT regime. I’m 46 and peri-menopausal.

The bloating I’ve had the past few days has been off the scale. I look pregnant. It’s so uncomfortable. I’m quite lean in build so it’s really noticeable.

im at my absolute wits end with peri, being diagnosed with RA in last fed years, and just completely had enough. I couldn’t take progesterone orally due to side effects, and now I’m so worried I’m going to be stuck with this.

has anyone else experienced this, and did it resolve with time?

Thank you for reading

Have you rung the clinic that fitted your coil? I had mine done a few weeks ago and I had period type pain for a week afterwards. They did say to phone if I had any problems.

I haven’t yet no, it was done in hospital. But have spoken to my GP tho they weren’t much help.

Fingers crossed it all settles down. Just not really had such extreme bloating before.

Hi, it was only fitted on Monday so aware it hasn’t been long. I had an endometrial biopsy at the same time. I just recall the extreme bloating from last times I had it fitted, but I know I need patience. Has all just knocked me for six tbh

You could use natural progesterone cream - mirena coil isn't actually progesterone it is a progestin a type of synthetic male hormone

A friend pulled hers out herself for the same reason. It’s not for everyone. I’ve refused mirena so many times, I didn’t do well with the two coils I tried for birth control when I was younger.

I’m on urtogestan cyclical days 15-24 and heard from a friend on the thyroid forum that I could insert it vaginally rather than swallowing it, GPs don’t tell you because it isn’t licenced for that (off label) but apparently quite common.

The benefit of urtogestan is it’s not the sythentic progestin version that Mirena is. I did some reading and in Denmark their full population study linked mirena to depression and there are class action law suits against Bayer in the US for internal injuries.

Don’t settle - insist that if it feels wrong it probably is.

I had a uterine biopsy with no anaesthesia last time I was in, it was horrific and so painful and took weeks to settle and stop bleeding so it could also be that.

Hope you get comfort soon. 🤗

Thank you and I have been wondering if I could pull mine out! Tho I can’t imagine the pain right now.. I’ve had 2 mirenas before so for last 14 years pretty much, just had a years gap this last year. Didn’t have major issues before so really hoping it settles. Though I won’t persist if it doesn’t.

I was on Utrogestan before - both orally and pessary (I didn’t insert the oral tablet, there is a pessary but yes not licensed) I couldn’t get on with it orally, but pessary was ok, though for me a bit messy and I know I would keep forgetting.

But yes could also be the biopsy..

The things we have to put up with 😔
