Recommendations for keeping cool at night

Hi all, I’m 55 and have just hit menopause. I’m on oestrogel cream and utrogestan tablets to control my vertigo symptoms, which also means I’m not getting extreme menopausal symptoms. However, I do feel very hot at night and am having trouble sleeping. I have a tempur mattress (due to a back problem) which does make you hotter than normal, which has been fine up till now, but now it’s becoming an issue. Has anyone got any tips on keeping cool at night? I don’t want to get rid of the mattress as it’s sooo comfortable and my back plays up horribly if I don’t sleep on that. Thanks in advance!

It's so tough. I just keep the windows open, a light cover, wear very little and I also find it helps to get out of bed for a few mins to cool down and then I'm ok when I get back in.

Yes I already have a light cover and keep the window open. Getting out of bed is a good idea, I’ll try that.

It’s so horrible. Night sweats are the worst. Luckily mine have stopped since being on HRT but I used to get out of bed & go in the bathroom & fan myself- that helped. How about a bedroom fan?

Already got a bedroom fan. I think the main problem is my mattress, and I’m not sure how to get round that one!

Hello. I find 100% pure cotton sheets/duvet cover always keeps me cooler than other materials. Egyptian cotton especially. Might be worth a try if you don't already use 100% cotton.

Yes funnily enough we’ve currently got the tempur fitted sheet which isn’t 100% cotton so I’ve ordered another sheet which is arriving tomorrow. I’m hoping that will help!

I've suffered from night sweats for about 5 years and bamboo bedding was a game changer for me, it feels much cooler than cotton and is sweat wicking, so I find even when I do have a night sweat, which is slightly less since starting HRT, the sheets aren't drenched and they dry really quickly. The trick with all bedding is not to add fabric softener as this stops the flow of air through the fabric.

Oh that’s great to know thanks. I didn’t realise you shouldn’t add softener. I’ll stop doing that.

Hi there, just wanted to update you and thank you for your suggestion of bamboo sheets. Wow they are fantastic! Really made a difference 😀

Freezer pack wrapped in a tea towel. works a treat. Toss it back in the freezer in the morning. There's also bedtime cooling systems that you could look at. They're a bit pricey though.

I slept with only a sheet and the room at or below 20 degrees for years. I’m not menopaused yet but the heat didn’t bother me last summer for the first time in 6 years.
