Hi I am the mother of a38 year old who is classed as having severe learning disabilities .I would like to know why some of his friends at day center have been vaccinated and he has not .I think it is totally unfair as he is just as much at risk .It seems that he has severe learning disabilities only when it suits the authorities and not when it can help save his life .Has anyone else had this problem

Were the others older than your son with health issues, that would be a reason they would be vaccinated first ? It’s a hard one, my son is 46 with severe learning disabilities, his housemate who is 49 and not assessed as having a SLD has just had his vaccine and my son hasn’t. I believe they are in group 6 with group 5 ( over 60’s ) starting next week. I agree it seems unfair but possibly depends on other factors, I.e. gp surgeries, areas, rate of progress etc. Hope we don’t have to wait much longer.

One friend is exactly the same age with more abilities than Ian but like you say we have to wait were always at the back of the queue and sometimes you despair of the continuous fight for everything able bodied people have as a right.

This sounds very frustrating. I agree with 49Twister that are a lot of different factors that might affecting when people get the vaccine.

I have asked Lyndsey from our helpline to see if she has anything to add.

Someone sent me this link earlier about from the bbc called How many people in the UK have been vaccinated so far? - bbc.co.uk/news/health-55274833

It gives a bit of an idea about how many different things are going on, and how it varies in different areas. In your case, it is harder to understand as they are all in the same area, with similar needs. It is likely to down to being in different groups and with different GPs.

I really hope you don't need to wait much longer.

It's so difficult especially when you can see others getting their vaccine and yet your son isn't yet. Please see below :-

Book now if you're eligible

You do not need to wait to be contacted if any of the following apply:

you are aged 65 and over

you have previously received a letter saying you are at high risk from coronavirus (clinically extremely vulnerable)

you are a frontline health or social care worker

You can book appointments at a larger vaccination centre or a pharmacy that provides COVID-19 vaccinations.

If you feel he should be getting his Vaccine then use the link I've provided. It may be worth contacting your GP to ask why he hasn't been notified.
