Autism and illness

Hi everyone, this posting may seem a little strange to many of you but I feel the need to ask anyway.A few days prior to my daughter getting a cold (she has Autism) her attention span is fantastic, her attention to detail increases immensely and her overall ability to do things improves. I can always tell when she is about to become ill.

Does anyone else notice this happening to loved ones with Autism prior to an illness?

Many thanks

hi I haven’t no but it might be worth speaking to the Autistic society to ask them if they’re aware of this.

My son, age 28, has rarely been ill, but on the occasions as a child when he was, he seemed so 'normal'. I used to think it was because he was off food (he is gluten-free and dairy-free anyway) but I did watch a lecture online once where the speaker thought the phenomenon was related to temperature, which had never occurred to me.

yes I have noticed how my daughter can seem extremely sharp on occasions and this is often around illness. Quite often it’s when she’s in recovery. It’s like her batteries have recharged. It was really obvious when she was in hospital a few years back recovering from neurosurgery. I commented to my husband that it was like her fog had lifted. I was epileptic when I was younger and used to experience a sense of exaggerated lucidity after a seizure.

There was a program called ‘the A word ‘on television a while back ,you could search for it on google ,and during one of the episodes the young Autistic boy had the same experience

I personally find that anything that gets me to focus on my body, and most things that keep my immune or inflammation systems well directed, tend to clear the mind for a while.

My son's speech used to improve just before getting a fever. This was when he was 4 to 6 years old maybe?
