From the event team lining the finish straight. It was an amazing and emotional experience. The weather was amazing and it was such a great day. Fantastic effort from all who made it💥💪👊👏👏👏 🏅 🥇

Well done to all HU Brighton 10k and Marathon Runners
It was SO GOOD to see you!!!! xxx
I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds volunteering emotional!!! It's a really positive, uplifting experience isn't it - and great to see what goes on on the other side too 😊
It was a day I shall remember for a long time, Linda and if I get the chance I’ll definitely do it again next year.
Just witnessing all the emotions of grit, anguish, determination, relief and pain was something I’ll never forget either.
My hat is off to anyone who has completed a marathon. What a fantastic achievement.
The worst part of the day was when we tried to get this poor young man down to the finish which was less than 50 meters away but he didn’t make it and St John whisked him away on a trolley. He made a full recovery.
Oh wow. How disappointing for him!
Well that’s put me off trying for a marathon one day 😳 or was he doing the 10k?
That's why I don't like flat runs or races in general, too much pressure to be fast and end up overdoing it. On trails you get to walk and eat normal food as you go round, so much easier!
What a great photo! I can imagine some of the things you saw and heard, well done all of you 👏👏
Fair to say there were moments of carnage around the finish line but what an inspiration to see. I’m in complete admiration for anyone who has run a marathon and, maybe one day, I might just join them.
It strikes me that marathons are at the opposite end of the running spectrum to your current focus. Don't get me wrong, I think that your results are a fantastic achievement and your UK rankings are amazing but that's a very different type of running to long distance stuff.
I'm sure that, if you put the time in to train for it, you could run a marathon. However, I wonder how compatible it would be with your current sprint training. I really don't know how compatible they are but it seems to me that there would be conflicting requirements. Still, reading your profile suggests that you're planning on focusing on sprinting in the shorter term and maybe longer distances after that.
Anyhow, bon courage whichever course you choose to follow.
You’re absolutely correct. Aerobic, or endurance running, exercises, and develops, entirely different sub systems of the body and are not really compatible. Endurance running focuses on slow twitch muscle fibres that utilise energy in a different way from fast twitch muscles and therefore there’s no way a sprinter will ever be able to run a decent 5k never mind a marathon.
As you point out, I am indeed focusing on sprinting for now and at some point in the future I may well have a marathon in me. Just not yet.
I’ve taken aerobic running as far as I can for now and I’m looking for new challenges. It’s how I roll. 🤷♂️
I would like to think I could make the top 10 rankings in the U.K. for my age group for 200m, and my coach this week certainly thinks that’s a possibility, so barring injury, let’s see. 🤞
I am always in admiration of the selfless volunteers cheering and supporting the runners at their worst moments and their beet ones. Hats off to you as well!
I was shocked at just how many volunteers are needed at these events. Yep, they were all amazing too. Even the crowd were doing their part. One lady was handing out sausage rolls at the notorious power station and so many people spoke of how much that lifted them during the most difficult part of the course mentally.
How brilliant Brian, that parkrun volunteering was good practice. It must have been great to be on the finishing strait.
I’ve put my name down for volunteering at the Great South Run to stop me joining my buddies in running it again! Well that’s the plan
That's a great support team and it's interesting to have an insight into what it's like to do that.
Well done RunBrianRun ! Your post has reminded me that I've registered to volunteer at the trail event I did, but haven't heard anything back from the organisers yet. It's only eight weeks away so I'm going to chase them up, not least because I've masses of other things to do around that time.
Thank you for volunteering on the day Brian and to all the other volunteers, there must have been loads of you. You certainly helped me get around.
Thank you Bladerunner2049 ☺️ There were loads of volunteers around the event and many generous members of the public too handing out sweets, geeks and even sausage rolls I heard. 😀
We had 9 on the finishing straight. I’m glad to hear you made it round. Huge congratulations to you 💪👏👏👏 You are now part of the exclusive 1% club 👍
Ooh, I don’t remember any ‘geeks’ being handed out, but by then they could have been handing out Bill Gates’ himself and I wouldn’t have noticed 🤣
