There seems to be a weather theme running the posts today. I am reminded of the Two Ronnies weather forecast which went something like "today will dry in Rye, there will be gales in Wales and if you are going to Lissingdown, be sure to take an umbrella." Well today Lissingdown has come to me!! It looks like as though we will have rain for the next week, maybe interspersed with snow when the temperature drops π. Molly pushed a tentative nose out of the door first thing and quickly withdrew into the kitchen; too wet even for her liking!
I, on the other hand absolutely needed to run. I hadn't managed to run 5k since 19 December, thanks to a dicky calf, so I didn't really care what the weather was doing. A final obstacle; Mrs BC did a very capable impression of my mother by saying "you will catch your death of cold", but I stood firm; I was going out and that was that! I can be masterful π
I knew that my beloved trails would be hopelessly clarty, so I made up a pavement/tarmac route as I went along. The route ended up looking like Nessie, so I am dedicating this run to our Scottish friends. There were lots of deep puddles, flowing rivulets and the odd claggy patch, but I kept going. At 4k I wondered "is this enough?" but my inner idiot took over and said, nope; 5k or bust! So 5k in 35 minutes and not so much as a twitch from my calf. I am on a roll π.I also got an "on fire" badge last week...I recorded dog walks and made 5 activities in a row for the 2020 challenge. Today I got the Strong Start badge...which is basically for just turning up on a New Year's Day run! So, looking forward to a good start to 2021 and praying that I don't get a cold; don't like "I told you so!!".......Happy New Year lovely people. π

Oh no BC, your weather was nothing like ours this morning, although itβs drizzling a bit now. Ours was grey, but more importantly frosty and dry. The mud will return when it warms up, but for now .... π€
I remember that Two Ronnies sketch! Absolute classic. π€£π€£
Keep running, but keep being careful and quell that inner idiot of yours! π
Happy New Year Beachcomber66. You made me laugh . ' inner idiot'. I must have one as well . As I also went for a run this morning in thick compact ice. Managed to keep upright though π€£π€£Happy New Yearπ₯³π₯³
Happy New Year BC and fellow strong starter. Who doesnβt like a badge from Mr Garmin? Your Strava art of Nessie is fun too. Keep looking after those calves of yours. πββοΈππ»ππ»
Happy New Year BC. Congratulations on your 2021 5k PB. Far too icy here for me to risk running although I did do 10k on icy roads yesterday - my inner idiot taking over! Iβd vowed to do 10k on NYE so a bit of ice wasnβt going to stop me. Went for a walk to start RED January instead - a double rainbow and the ducks were gliding across the frozen lake π¦π¦π¦
Happy New Year Sandie; I definitely prefer the puddles to ice! It was an accident on ice which led to my taking up running, so a good outcome, but I wouldnβt like a repeat spinal fracture thanks very much. You take care (I sound like Mrs BC this morning!!)π
Some of the tabloid weather forecasts can be taken with a pinch of salt, some say Scotland will get 31 INCHES of SNOW later in January, how do they know?
Happy New year to you BC66, that was a good run and start for you to start the New year.
Happy New Year to you Al. I think people are saying that the atmospheric conditions could become similar to those which brought us the Beast from the East in 2018. We will see I guess. We have a light dusting of snow this morning here on the North East coast. I always use the XC weather app which was recommended to me by an Isles of Scilly boatman. It is regularly updated through the day and you can see how forecasts a few days ahead can change radically. Hope you don't get your 31 inches!
Lol, great post BC, I like a smile when I'm on the forum...well done on your 5k, glad the calf behaved. I also hope you don't get a cold, you'd never live it down ππ
Thanks Run46. I think I am in the clear cold wise π₯΅! I have just been out in the snow to do the food shopping. The evidence trail is now decidedly murky.π
Calf feels great thanks, but I am not going to push it. We are tier 4 too, although our cases per 100k locally is way below average. Suppose digging out the drive tomorrow will count as cross training
Our trend was down too so folks are a bit non-plussed.
Hopefully weβll soon be free of it all, and before we know it, weβll be running with the sun in our faces π, and thereβll be buns for tea π
It snowed like hell here after I was safely back indoors post run. Itβs peeing it down now and above freezing. Yay! π
We got maybe 4 inches of snow yesterday; enough to make driving interesting, but overnight rain has washed a lot of it away. What is key now is that the thaw continues; if we have a freeze, conditions will be really treacherous.π€
Given that my running career started following a spinal fracture as a result of a fall on ice, I am a tad cautious about these conditions!! I do have some yak track type things though (still in the box!)
No chance π. That is one thing about social distancing; it keeps us clear of other infections too. With all this high tech waterproof gear, the conditions donβt really matter, except for the mud!
You are right about the social distancing, weβve hardly had anyone with a cold at work so far this year and itβs a warm busy environment where if one catches something we usually all end up with it
