I did my first 10 mile run! 1h35 so also my longest time wise run yet
I used the distance based 10 mile run on NRC - partially for comfort, and partially because I just really like these runs. Also because they always tell you your distance I turned off the strava announcements for pace, and went by feel instead.
I planned a route which took me along the river, through the pretty part of the city, around a lake, and then all the way back home! From this it was also easier to split up in my mind - into different chunks. I must say my body just wasn't feeling optimal today, so in the beginning I wondered whether to attempt the distance or not, but after about 6 or 7k I settled into it and found more of a rhythm.
For most of it I felt pretty good! Coach Bennet decided to do a fartlek at km 11 which I honestly though he was joking about until he was telling me to pick it up! And then again haha. But thankfully this didn't tire me out too much. The last mile and a half though I could really tell I was tiring. Somehow it felt like I was slowing down a lot, although Strava tells me otherwise.
Unfortunately because I took a wrong turn somewhere in my run, at 10 miles I was still 3km away from home! I was tempted to continue running, but thought it wouldn't be sensible - so I walked. I swear that 2/3km walk home was so much harder than the run itself! Also I had developed little blisters on the bottom / ball of my feet which has never happened before - and that was definitely a limiting factor to the run.(please give my advice on blisters on the bottom of your feet??)
On the other hand, I felt better come the end than I thought I might have done! my legs and arms were tired for sure, but aerobically I was good. And I somehow managed negative splits! Started with 6:20, and then finished with 5:21!
I wish I could have done nothing all afternoon but unfortunately I was working in a garden all afternoon. With this run, plus 4h of shovelling soil, I don't think I'll move for a couple of days
