I don’t like Jelly Babies............That was my dilemma of the week having seen reports of our HUHM ‘club’ using them to great effect.
So with that in mind I set out tonight to complete the v10 miles race with ‘Cola bottles’ in my pocket. The king of all the haribos (though closely contested by the fried egg I’m sure you’ll all agree?). Anyway........I decided to run to the sea tonight and along the seafront before heading the long way home.
I felt good for the first 10k and was trying to remember to keep a steady and slower pace, particularly as I was conscious about the tuna pasta I’d had about an hour and a half earlier.
So I ran to the sea, past the arches cafes where on special occasions I’m allowed a full English, past the lights on our famous pier (longest pleasure pier in the world and all that), past the arcades and finishing pretty much exactly outside Roots Hall, where I’m hoping to resume my regular Saturday afternoons with my 10 year old when possible. I took photos of all of the above mentioned ‘landmarks’ however, I didn’t realise how poor some of the pictures were until I added them to Strava.
To prove the point and just because, I’ve added the least blurry one of them here too!! Why not?!?!?
Hope everyone has enjoyed their v10 miles or is gearing up to complete it soon. I’m pretty chuffed despite my time being the slowest of the 3 times I’ve run that distance. It was definitely the most comfortable, probably because I remembered to eat some Cola bottles when the going got tough at 14k

I really like Southend and have never been to your ground. So this season my son (he is 18 and we've been going home and away since he was 4) and I aim to add yours to our list if at all possible. Play-offs this year for us...by the way, fried eggs and hearts rule in Haribo"s.
Anyway...a super run and one in which you felt more comfortable with which is a really good sign. Best wishes for the year except against the Mighty Mariners.
Thanks GTFC. I had wondered before whether your name was homage to Grimsby Town. Mariners vs. Shrimpers has a good sound to it. Our away end isn’t fantastic but well worth a visit, particularly as you’ll likely pick up 3 points. We are just hoping to not be relegated two seasons in a row!
Fantastic run Kevin, it sounds like so much fun! Great time too. Well done. 💥
I do have an axe to grind about cola bottles though. I eat all things Haribo, but I don’t like those so much. Fried eggs though - oh yes! Tangfastics are my favourite and I need to restrict myself or I’ll polish off the whole bag pronto! 😅
Woohoo!!! Great job! A comfortable 10 miles is a thing of joy 😀 Did you want to give a time for the woohoo board?
Cola bottles will be a great substitute if you like them (although my vote is given to Tangfastics too)- just be sure not to choke on them! You're so lucky to be able to run by the sea, I'm very envious of all you coast residing runners.
Haribo Cola Bottles v Jelly Babies .... I'm just not going to venture an opinion for fear of stoking the flames. But for Haribo devotees who might be passing that way ... the Haribo shop in Bonn has an amazing range of the blessed things (Bonn contributes the "bo" in "Haribo" - it's where it started).
I'm looking forward to being able to go to a game sooner or later ... newly promoted Harrogate Town is just up the road from me and I was thinking of going to game or two (Southend visit next year so who knows...)
Our first home game of the season is against Harrogate (Which I’m sure you know). Such a shame it’s behind closed doors given that it’s their first ever EFL game
Wine gums are apparently very good for building bones. A doctor told me that years ago when I was being tested for osteoporosis. He didn’t mention jelly babies though....
No I can’t do jelly babies while running either - not enough moisture in my mouth! Fruit pastilles worked for me or the more healthy stoned dates and dried apricots.
Well done on your run too, from a south coast runner 🏃♀️🌊🌊
