So I was going to go for a 10 mile PB and banish the dissatisfaction of my one and only 10 mile race to date, GSR '18.
But plans have changed and my primary goal now is to run slow, over longer distances and remain uninjured! I decided to run it anyway, but slowly.
My mantra today 'pain is just weakness leaving your body' (as spotted on the Rocktape I used to cover my blister points) - this mantra may be very helpful over the next few weeksπ. Running slower and steadier than normal, my mind had no need of gremlins ... Spotify had other ideas though π΅ I say I'm doing fine but I'm f****** lying π΅!!! Spotify, I don't need that sort of help thank you π
Not my fastest 10 miles, but definitely my most comfortable π. Congratulations if you've already completed yours, good luck if your 10 miles is later in the week.

Thanks - who knows what's possible? Less than four years ago I didn't think I could run for one minute!!! I didn't dream I could run at all!!! Never say never π
It was a stress fracture - foot. I was out for almost 5 months and built back to HM in under 6 months. There many moments when I thought I'd not be able to run again. The come back needs to be steady, and it's taken me even longer to have any confidence in the bone, but healing happens and we can definitely build back again. Lot's of patience needed, but never lose sight of the fact that it's possible. Oh ... and every comeback run is worth waiting for π₯°
I had thought that it was a stress fracture. 5 months sounds like a long, long time indeed! If I remember rightly you were able to cycle before you were able to run which must have helped your fitness. Building up to HM in 6 months sounds amazingly fast to me. Did you repeat the whole of C25k and B210k?
I can now walk without crutches and as of yesterday even feel confident on the stairs without crutches. But if I use my leg too much it is unhappy and my knee swells up more. It has only been 3 weeks and 2 days so far. Delighted to be gardening again. Getting down to the ground level has been very difficult, but literally today my ability to get down has improved. I don't feel ready for the daily 20-30 minute walks that were my husband and my routine, so you can imagine running is currently on some distant horizon. π
It took longer than expected to heal, probably because I had to carry on working and dog walking - I was booted but carried on weight bearing. My foot and ankle swelled for ages! Not any more. Improvements came in jumps, and sometimes I felt I was going backwards, but that was probably not so. Anything you can do to stay fit will help - seated core and upper body work. You will get running again, but it's early days yet. Keep the faith π
Happy injury free running to you. ππββοΈπΈ I look forward to posting one day about having run 10 miles! My maximum was 13km back in January or February. As I have heard it said many times, the runs will be waiting for me! π
Perfect...I did a little too much of that after my long run last weekend π°π«π«π«
My favourite distance π well done Linda. I hope this run gives you confidence going forward. Well done because it is an achievement, not least because it's your first run in a couple of years and it felt more comfortable. Rest up a little now, 10 miles is a heck of a distance π½
I agree . I've never taken part in an actual organised event. Maybe because I didn't have the confidence to do so. But the past few months have taught me i can do it. So maybe next year I will take part in one π
Amazing run Linda! Your slow pace isnβt (in my book)! Sounds like youβre going to avoid more injury which is fantastic. πββοΈπββοΈπββοΈπββοΈβ€οΈ
This pace us slower than my normal, but then normally I'm red and sweaty and breathing fairly hard! At this pace I'm much more comfortable. I'm getting various new niggles though, and wonder if it's related. I'm trying hard to keep my form despite the reduced pace. Hopefully they will just disappear π
I love that mantra! I must remember that one when my knee grumbles π
Sounds a great run Linda. Apart from when Iβm racing I run all my long runs slowly but recently Iβve been thinking I should probably run more regularly at race pace, otherwise when I do itβs such a shock π³
I love it too. Rocktape is inspirational, but it's the first time that particular phrase has caught my eye. I don't usually run at race pace, but I mostly run fast enough to be a bit uncomfortable, so this new approach is really nice. Because my aim is to wildly extend distance my head is not even trying to mess with me on how difficult it will be to speed up on the day! π€ Kew 10k next weekend is unliky to be a PB though - shame, cos my last race which was Jan or Feb was the 10k PB I should be trying to beat - still, more time to appreciate the gardens π
We used to go all the time when we lived nearer, but I haven't been for many uears. Will make a day of it. Mr 9389 can come in for free after the race and the car space is booked til 3pm. I'd like to order some nice weather to top it off π
Those memories just will not fade - it's like a sore that I keep scratching π€¬. I know it sounds ridiculous but I think I just need to get out there and run that distance faster than 2018, without taking walking breaks, and enjoy it. Then I should be able to put those memories where they belong - firmly in the past! I'm pretty sure I can achieve that, but the opportunity never quite arises for one reason or another. Never mind. All in a good cause. I've scratched that sore for pretty much 2 years now, so a little longer won't really matter ππ€ͺπ
