Yesterday afternoon I ran my first 10k race. I graduated ju-ju- wonderful 10k plan in July but had booked the race in May! I wanted to run in memory of my dad who passed away 2 years ago.
Weather forecast had been crap all week for yesterday so this added to my worry if my calf /hamstring niggles would be ok. Then more importantly running attire stress was added to this too!!
Anyway race day came and I was actually calm and excited. The Bournemouth Marathon Festival was very well organised and on arrival the atmosphere was amazing.
I’d forgotten all my worries and was ready to run. And we were off! Weather was cool but dry. First 7K lovely easy run. Music playing, crowds cheering with familiar faces waving.
Grabbed a bottle of water at 7km and within seconds started to feel sick 🤢. Struggled on with waves of nausea. Calf niggle was there in background but easily ignored. Slowed down a bit and nausea seemed to ease. Was it the water??
Last stretch now - Up and down the never ending Bournemouth Pier where my husband and son were cheering me on. Last K was the longest K!!! Ok here we go - deafening cheering as I sprinted to the finish! Well felt like a sprint. 🏃🏻♀️😬
Woohoo!! Leg started to stiffen up after finishing - but so elated I’d done it! My 1st race and loved it. Glad when I finished but loved it. 😬 Oh and a couple of PB’s. 💪🏼
I’ve raised a massive £1040 to date. My 1st race dedicated to you dad. ❤️

Lovely run report and well done on your first 10k race! Yep, that last k always seems the longest 😩 but great that you had family support there and what a lovely tribute to your dear Dad. Well done on all your fundraising too.🙂
Massive congratulations my VRB! I know how much this meant to you and what a wonderful gift to your dad's memory. I know you'll remember your first race forever. Well done on the PB's, but I know they'll take a poor second place to the feeling of elation of completing your very first race and the thoughts of your dad that would overwhelm you at the finish line. So very proud of you and I'm sure I stand in a very large crowd to that end. 😘😘😘🤩
Ohh how wonderful. Well done. What an amazing achievement for you personally and for the amount you have raised in memory of your dad. I got to the 'never ending' bit and was right there with you! It's a horrible feeling isn't it? but you overcame and finished in great time too. Congratulations. Hope you are resting and being treated super well today
Just to reiterate what I said on the other forum - yes, a massive well done Alka, a wonderful achievement, a wonderful way to cap what you have achieved this year and a wonderful (and emotional) tribute to your late father. Fantastic 👏👏👏
Super, super congrats! And you're so right, those kilometres are definitely differing lengths all the way round 😂
I get a bit nauseous when my heart rate goes too high, maybe when you grabbed a water you had a bit of a speedy moment to catch up and tipped your heart rate over the comfortable zone a bit? Glad it passed anyway, and brilliant result 😊
Thank you! Yes that makes sense as was going faster than normal until that point. Then tried to pick up pace after momentarily stopping. All lessons learnt for next time. 💪🏼😬
