Had my first longish run since injury #2. This second hip injury hit me mentally harder than the first knee one since it happened around a week after I got back to longer distance. This time around I am trying to ease back even more slowly. I also eased back running on knee injury 1, but was doing lots of physio and cycling to make up for it and I suspect I overdid that part a little. This time I will just rest between runs. Also been experimenting with shoes. This time the Hokas worked better. Last time they were worse. I moved from a 5k to an 8k then 10k and yesterday got a slow 15k in. Found a beautiful new route through a local trail system (the pics are from that run). Fingers crossed I can continue. I’ve lost around 4-5 weeks on my 50k plan so I’m not sure I can get enough training in to properly prepare for it (assuming it is not cancelled) but for now I am just happy to run. These weekend long runs mean a lot, and I really want to keep doing them. Enjoy your runs everyone!

Once more from the top
Great news!!!!! All the best for your continued recovery xxx
p.s. those photos are 😍
Hi Decker - here's hoping you make the steady progress you want this time! So, are you back in the Hoka's now?
Still in my Hoka Arahi's and marvelling at the difference they have made to my knee. Have already bought a second pair...! 👟
Beautiful photos too - do you have to drive to your runs or is this all 'on your doorstep'?🙂
Thanks Sandra. For the moment I am back in my Hokas. I still have faith in them. They helped me get my best ever HM time back before Covid, but the shift between sole heights does put stressess and relief on different spots within my legs/knees/ hips which sort of makes sense. They also have high arches compared with my Sauc breakthrus.
For wooded runs like this I usually need to drive a short distance about 20 min to get here. I only have one small wooded area nearby.
I tend to run from the door and we are lucky to have access to lots of countryside on our doorstep. However, me and my OH are planning a hilly trail run in the next week or two, which will mean a short drive. Watch this space - I will definately take photos as it is a stunning route with amazing views! 🙂
Superb Decker, by holding yourself back a bit it seems that you are actually moving forward. Long may it continue and stay positive.
Beautiful pictures, it must have been lovely ha ing scenery like that on your 15k run. I hope you can remain injury free for a long time to come. Happy running 🤗
Thank you, it was great. Many of my aches just disappear when I start off in the woods. They sometimes come back later, but that is later’s problem
Great news Decker! Fab pictures, must be wonderful running through all that countryside. Fingers crossed you can keep building with no more injury. Take care 🙂
Well done Decker, I hope everything works out for you!🙂👍
Bummer..... Do you know what caused the hip problem? Shame about lost time. When I had a thigh problem during my 50k training (Hal Higdon plan) I contacted him and asked where to continue from. His advice was spot on and I completed it 2-3 weeks later. Maybe you should try similar approach and ask a top pro? I found that many are keen to offer advise (I am 'friends' with some on Twitter). Good luck mate!
I suspect just too much physio focus on that left leg/ glute plus the ramped up cycling, but it’s still a bit of a mystery. I’m going back to just easy runs with actual rest days between them. Maybe introduce intervals/hills later. That approach got me up to 40k, so we’ll see.
Long slow runs are the best! Hopefully your body will co-operate 💪👍😃🤞
Loads of empathy Decker....I am still on the comeback trail since April! I did get in a 9k in June, but that was the high spot. Things are looking up this week though; had two good runs of 3k and 4k with no after effects. You end up analysing everything you do; am I doing the right exercises? are any of them aggravating the problem? have I applied the KT too tightly?.....and so on.Rehab takes over your life, and just when you think you are making progress something else starts hurting and you limp home, again, and start to think is this ever going to be fixed! But we keep going, trying different things systematically and carefully, trying to find the perfect cocktail. I have only had one trip out in my new Hokas; I really don 't want the variable of a new shoe type on top of everything else. Time for them when I have got a few more K's on the board. It looks as though you are well on you way back; excellent work 👍👍👍
Thanks BC. I can totally sympathize with the overthinking. I think my overthinking led to some overdoing. Now I am only thinking about my next easy run. That’s all. I truly hope you are sorted sooner than later. However you can make it work for yourself. Your progress this week is promising! Here’s to more of that!
Hips are bollickses. Take it real easy Decker, after my own episode a couple of years ago I am super cautious - rest of the body I'll push a bit at times, but the ignomynof literally rolling around in the ground clutching my bent leg with the painnof a popped hip is not something I want to repeat. You have a great fitness foundation so you will bounce back, never fear.
