Just got back from running a gentle 3K with a friend of mine which I really enjoyed! Not feeling at all sore from all my running over the weekend and feeling great! I am a bit worried about my right knee though because when I'm running, if I land on my foot at a certain angle, I get this short sharp shooting definite pain going straight through the right side of my knee and then it's gone as quickly as it came. It happened twice during the first half of my 5K race and then it happened 4 times during my run this morning but then settled down halfway through both my runs. It definitely feels like it is a nerve pain because it's only at a certain angle when my foot strikes the ground that it suddenly hurts every now and again. I've noticed this ever since my 10 mile long run on Friday. Normally, I wouldn't be as concerned about it but it's just because I have my very first half marathon next Sunday, it's making me paranoid!
Nice little 3K run as start of taper ... - Fun Beyond 10K & ...
Nice little 3K run as start of taper week but also got strange knee pain every now and again...
Possibly shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted Redcello, but might your trainers be to blame? They’re carrying you further than they’re used to nowadays! Are they offering adequate support, are they nearing the end of their running life? Maybe be worth checking out before Bath ....
Or perhaps your body is reacting to your (understandably) large jump in distance after your recent setbacks?
Take it easy before the 15th - don’t jeopardise your HM. I can’t wait to meet you and it would be amazing if the whole of Team HU Bath could get round injury free. ❤️
I don't think it is my trainers they feel fine but I think it's like it's my body reacting to such large jumps in long run mileage if I am honest. I keep on getting blisters though and a guy in a running shop today said it maybe because my shoes are too small. So going back and getting them checked out tomorrow hopefully! Can't wait to meet you too!
I also get those weird pains here and there. I tend to notice them more just before a race 🙂 They come and then disappear and sometimes it is as simple as adjusting your landing angle slightly, or moving to a different part of the road that has a slightly different angle. It is very tricky to know when something is serious, but when it does not stop then I slow or pull off and stretch a bit which usually helps. I think there is a great chance you are just fine so don’t stress too much about it.
I think most of us probably get a bit paranoid just before a race and we’re ultra sensitive to niggles and aches, I know I am! Maybe lots of stretching now. Could you have a sports massage? I got one last week and it simply alleviated many of my little niggles. Or, you could also self-massage the sore areas. I do that too.
We’re on the final stretch, lots of praying to the running gods.....🤞🏃♀️🙂
Yeah, my housemate has come down with a bit of a cold too which has also made me paranoid because I don't want to come down with anything during taper, being so close to race day! I've booked in for a student massage on the 12th March which Linda told me about so that should sort out any niggles! Race day cannot come fast enough, I just want it to be here now!
Is it always in the early phase of a run? It could be that you are still a bit tight from the increased long run, and that as you run these muscles or tendons or whatever warm and stretch and then settle down. If that's the case, then maybe focus on stretching as often as you can until the race, but particularly before starting out on a run. Hopefully, if it isn't a lasting pain, and isn't getting worse, that's a pretty good indication that it isn't too serious. if you can manage a professional sports massage before the race, that may well help a lot. I have mine booked for next Monday! Good luck, we just need to hang in there for a little longer else cheekychipmunks is going to have to carry the three of us round 😍
Sure, no problem. We might just finish by the end of the 2021 Bath Half! 😅
Yeah it is always in the early phases and then settles down which is strange! I will give stretching ago and see how that works for me. It's definitely not getting worse and not lasting, it's not every strike thank goodness, but when it does happen every now and again, I have yelped in pain because it's quite sharp and sudden. And then I'm fine again. I want race day to come so badly, I'm tired of all this waiting around!
It defnitely sounds like something isn't warmed up properly and is tight. Not too long now ....
sorry no answers... but i've had a bit of the same and it comes and goes. was fine on this mornings run. Sunday i spent around an hour foam rolling and stretching and stuff which maybe helped. hopefully yours is feeling good now too.
I've just seen this on the Bath Half Marathon Facebook page:
Bath College Students are offering pre-event massages on 12th March in the College Spa for £17 and post-event Thai compress massages on 18th March for £25. To book in, call the Bath College Academy on 01225 328511.
ooooooh, that's brilliant! I have booked myself on to the 12th March slot! Thanks for the heads up Linda!
Brilliant! I don't imagine there are many places you can get a sports massage in Bath for £17! Hope it helps.
As I increased to 10 miles last year , I suffered from niggles in the ITB - you can google it. It often rears it’s ugly head as you are increasing distance. If it is that you can do some exercises to strengthen your legs/glutes/knees. My physio said it’s important not to run through ITB pain as it could develop into something much worse, ITBS. So walk/running may be needed for that HM. Good luck.
How long to go until HM?
