Well, I've just signed up for a charity 5k running round my little house on the 5th April! Itdoesn't quite make up for my cancelled half in San Sebastián but, at least, I will be running on the day.
My question is: how do I get my tracking to work on my phone as I will be indoors all the time? We have to send proof at the end of the run. I use a Motorola g4 plus. Thanks!

GPS is unlikely to work indoors I’m afraid. It’s not always great even in woodland or between high buildings With watches, if you set them to indoor running they will estimate the distance based on the number of steps you take rather thanGPS - it’s much less accurate but gives you a rough idea - but I don’t know if a phone can do that. Maybe if it has an accelerometer built in there could be a way to do it. Who’s organising the event? What kind of proof do they ask for?
Www.iter5.cat Confinarun They just ask for a photo of your watch and your photo to be put on social media. It's for charity (and we donated) not for prizes so I suppose it's not so important. It would be nice to know when I can stop running though!
Are they maybe expecting you to do it outdoors then? In the UK we’re allowed out for one reasonable period of outdoor exercise per day as long as were not with anyone outside our own household. Or some people are doing 5k as a hundred laps of their garden. If you have to be inside then a fitness watch or even a cheap tracker can give you a rough estimate based on step count, which Im sure would be acceptable in these circumstances. But you’re talking about using a phone not a watch. I’m not sure it has a way to count steps?
No, we are in total confinement in Spain, I'm afraid. Our two tiny terraces are beautiful to sit on but not big enough to say I could run outside. My fastest 5k is 30 mins. (in a race) and my slowest crossing roads on a very hot day is 34 mins. So, I will run for maybe 45 or an hour? Our house is really old (1781) and really tiny!
I had a wee Google. It seems there’s an app you can download called Moves which will use the accelerometer in your phone to estimate your step count. If you know your approximate stride length you can just set your target as the appropriate number of steps. It doesn’t need to be exact as you’re not likely to get a PB! For me, 5k would be around 5500 steps running or 6500 steps walking I think but that varies with the individual.
Good luck! Most of these events in the UK will take your word for it. If you showed proof of time spent running and a past run where you did 5k in say 34 minutes, I bet that would suffice
It was good fun! 43 mins. instead of my usual 30-32 mins. but nice to feel I had run 5k after 3 weeks of doing 2k a day in the corridor of my (closed) language school. When we are allowed out again, I'm going to run as far as I can and I'm thinking of doing the half marathon I missed around our village and along the beach. Can't wait!
That's fantastic!! Did you get dizzy? Did you get your data to send off?
I see you are in Catalunia, whereabouts?m Or was that just the website? I've visited L'Escala several times over the last couple of years, really love it there, one of my favourite places to run. I hope you get out soon xx
Thanks! We live on the coast in a lovely little village, which has managed somehow to keep all its charm, about an hour south of Barcelona. Yesterday was our 32nd year in Spain so we had a little celebration on the terrace after my run. We have to be thankful that we are OK and hopeful that things will start to return to normal before too long.
No, I didn't get dizzy! In the end, they accepted a step counter so I ran 6500 steps, which is what it says on internet is the average number for 5k. Will be interested to see how many it really is for me when I can run again....
