Well, the weather is very definitely...January. I know I talk about the weather a lot, partly a very British thing to do but it's also such a huge factor in our running! How do you deal with it? Shut it out with waterproofs and power through? Avoid going out and take to a treadmill? I do something inbetween, it's well documented that I think running in the rain is the pits and do avoid it if I can, but I also hate waterproof clothing--it just feels like when you step out of the shower and the curtain sticks to you and flaps about like a bit of soggy, clammy skin. Suffice to say I don't have a shower curtain in my house either! So I reschedule where possible, but if I do get caught out I take it on the chin and let my clothes absorb the rain. Praise be for wicking material though, at least they dry quickly!
Sometimes we don't feel like putting a whole post up but just want to share something small, so this is a great place for doing that during the week. Please join in the discussion! If you're new or a lurker this is a great place to say a little hi without the pressure of a full post.
Don't forget, if you have an event coming up this month (or any changes to one you've mentioned before) let us know in the sticky post! πππ
The wind is howling here, and it's only gonna get worse - but I must be brave!
Speaking of those who hate getting wet, we've been cleaning the carpets this morning and they are currently pretty wet. Both the cats have spent the day either hiding from the noisy machine, or attempting to get around the place without touching the floor πΎπββοΈπ
Hoping rain clears for tomorrow. Have to run in a cap in rain though. Donβt mind getting wet but draw the line at rain on my face. π my Cani partner is limping though so def need will power to get out the door without him. Hoping to get round the big half.
I wore my cap yesterday, and secured it with a high vis band to keep it from blowing off As soon as I got out the rain stopped, the wind dropped and the sun came out. I was boiling π₯΅π
Hi Sqkr and everyone. ππ I have unearthed my gym membership to avoid the wind. I donβt mind rain so much. I barely used the gym last year, but Iβve been 2 Mondays in a row now, and I enjoyed both. π
Last weekβs 5k was super slow - 7kph. This weekβs was a teeny bit quicker at 7.2kph for 4k, with km 5 increasing by 0.1kph every 200m, and I popped it up to 9kph for the final 100m! Ok ok, it was still slower than running outside, but the fact I had fun is making me look forward to next Monday when Iβll do it again - and go a little bit faster still! ππββοΈπ
Iβll need to brave the elements for my longer run on Wednesday I think. My towpath and trail routes are wayyyy too slippery and dangerous when itβs this wet, and my hilly runs will see me blown off my feet - so Iβm wondering where to go. I think going beyond 5k on the treadmill is a step too far for me! Weβll see.
I don't mind getting wet once I'm out running, but I'll reschedule so I can set out in the dry if I can. It's nowhere near as unpleasant as rain on my bike though! I'm juggling my HM plan on a daily basis to fit round the weather, races I keep booking (π) and getting to cycle in the dry π. Generally though, I'm very happy that my foot is holding up (for the moment at least). Good luck avoiding the wind over the next few days everyone!
Blowing a gale here...I thought I'd left it at the coast.
I don't mind getting rained on...but it does take determination to step out in torrential rain and wind.
I do have a couple of lightweight breathable rain jackets..Ron Hill...and I don't have any problem with wet inside...but weirdly I don't often get overheatedπ€ͺ
Not sure how this week will pan out..just back on HM training after the December Marcothon..a few great runs and then long run day yesterday at the coast...came to a really sharp halt when something went ping in my left hamstring...!!! It hurt..a lot..
I am hoping that it is a minor pull or strain..really hoping.
So am quite glad there's a weather warning here. I can concentrate on upper body work and not get too grumpy too quickly!
Blooming well is...I can't even believe it..Abi...3.8 K in to a long run..by the coast..gentle easy pace...I felt a twinge so stopped.. stretched.. massaged..set off again..a few paces and I felt something just go...pain shot down the back of my calf and up to the left buttock..I almost fell.
I just stood..and almost cried with the initial pain.. then, fortunately as I was only a short distance from home..limped back..RICE for the rest of yesterday and home now.
It reads..on NHS guidelines and Women's Running, ike a Level 1 pull or strain...no bruising..but swollen...pain in the hamstring, when I bend...it just feels uncomfortable and really, really odd.
So...no running and will see at the weekend, what is what.
Never had anything like this...!
I am so upset .I don't let myself think about it!π€£
That is what I am thinking...so..I've been on the IC before..upper body strength work..and wait...Having done the running over December..my legs are strong..(were..ha ha..) so..I can get back on track...it might slow me down in March...but what's new ?
No.....that's not fair!!! Physio toute suite ? I wouldn't settle until I knew what it was and had a recovery plan in place. How and why do these things appear out of the blue! Big π€ from the frozen North East.
It was wet and miserable yesterday in the late afternoon; a bit blowy too...oh and the wind felt chilly! I didn't feel like getting out there at all....in a bit of a mental trough....so what would any sensible person do? Stay at home ? probably; but I made myself do a 5k over my toughest hilly route, finishing off the run(which felt like an act of defiance!!) by the light of my head torch, with the hoots of incredulous owls in my ears! BUT I felt so much better for getting out there. If anything today's weather has been worse. I found a 90 minute sweet spot around lunchtime and got Molly out for what was to be our second beach run together. The run bit didn't happen; a few of her mates turned up together with a few soft touch nice people ready with cuddles and treats(for Molly!) so the only exercise I got was a walk plus throwing a ball around! She had a ball though! Survival mode this week I think!βοΈ π¨ β .
Pouring with rain and the wind picking up here as I write - luckily when I ran after work a little while ago, it was just beginning to really blow in, so not too bad. Been getting out at least three times a week βοΈ and have also been good with my clams, bridges and stretches βοΈ. Rather randomly, my right knee was a bit sore at the weekend (this is my good knee usually!!) so I used my exercise bike π² rather than going on a long run. It seems happier today so π€!
Happy running everyone and hope that anyone stuck on the ic is back out there soon.π
Just back from my 2nd week of bootcamp organised by our Run club. Its brutal but fun!πso new years resolution no 1 still going plus Red January (we did running alternating with exercises that's my run for the day! )
Had the most amazingly fun muddy off rd run last weds night. It was pouring down but pretty mild!! 6 miles of hills to the highest point on the island and slip sliding away in deep mud it was epic!
Talking of mud I'm entering a cross country 10k this coming Sunday 19th! Think it'll be pretty squishy! !!
I ran with the local club last night in the wind and rain. I'm pretty tolerant as long as it doesn't combine with GI issues, monthly cycle, etc.
A nice lady from ON was there with shoes to try. I did my 10k in Cloudswifts. Quite different to my Nike Lunarglides but I would consider them when it's time to change.
In other breaking news, I still can't run round corners so am going to see a physio Thursday about my ankle.
Its been a weather rollercoaster here. +8 one day and -15 the next. We ran in a full downpour which was not so bad as it was not cold. Then yesterday was freezing rain so you had to be careful where/how you stepped. Snowstorm is forecast for Saturday. Its been a challenging couple of months on the work front and going to too many funerals - 3 family friends passed, but at least I can still run. Hoping to be sorted with everything by the end of the month and get back to normal.
Thanks Lavender. Still better weather for us than the Polar Vortex of last year, so I canβt really complain.
08:15 The first coffee of the the day is a fond memory as I sit in the cool of the veranda listening to the rain and the wind and waiting for the recently relit woodburner to furnish a little warmth in my direction. I remind my self that I'm not made of sugar and rain is just well rain, but these high winds are a deal breaker. I am very fortunate to live and run in a very beautiful part of western France but the heavily wooded sides of the canal which make up my pesonnal running track form natures own version of Russian roulette in high winds. So the morning run will be replaced, balance board with hand weights for 20 while listening to some tunes and maybe later if this weather improves some planting of hazelnut trees. Does that count as crosstraining? Take care out There.
I don't have the problem of rain in Spain at the moment, but i do have a problem with the cold. I think the longer I spend living in Spain, the more Spanish I become and hate the cold.
I've been here 6 and a half years now, got married to my Spanish husband over the summer so looks like I'm here to stay too.
Anyway, it's -4 at the moment, and I'm so warm and cosy at home!!!
My training is going very very slowly, it's taking a long time to get back into it after a long running break. I ran 5k yesterday and managed to shave 59 seconds off my 5k from last week. Yesterday's run felt quite nice, but I can't believe that in 10 weeks I'll need to run over 4 times that amount. Eeeee
Here in Oslo we've just had the leftovers of your storm. So today's run is going to be windy, but nothing like what you've had in the UK.
I've had a bit of a surprise. Apparently hubby and I are signed for a 10 K event in a couple of weeks. A parkrun friend told us he had seen us on the list of participants. It's really weird, because we consciously haven't signed up for this event - I've done it 3 times before and don't really feel the need to do it again. I trawled through my emails and found an email from a year ago telling me that I was signed up, and a couple of emails between myself and hubby where we wondered how this had happened. At the end of the day, I'm not going to turn down a free place in an event, am I? Since I'm behind on my HM training, I'll consider it a training run.
