Well, I’ve had a pretty good week! Managed my runs and rides, all to plan. Really like adding ‘running for my country’ to my running resume (although I can’t believe just how bad the Vitality Running World Cup system is – I’d have been fired for delivering a system in that state, back in the day when I had a real job 😂). Just one week now to my HM, if it doesn't get cancelled, and I’m fully in the grip of (half) 'maranoia’, desperately trying to avoid sneezes, food poisoning, trip hazards and overstretching in yoga😨.
How’s your week been? Hope you’ve had a good one too. Let us know below.
Sometimes we don't feel like putting a whole post up but just want to share something small, so this is a great place for doing that during the week. Please join in the discussion! If you're new or a lurker this is a great place to say a little hi without the pressure of a full post.
Don't forget, if you have an event coming up in March (or any changes to one you've mentioned before) let us know in the sticky post! 👇👇👇
Hi Linda! I’ll join you in the HMaranoia! I’ll be so sad if it’s cancelled, but I’m trying (and failing miserably) not to think about that. 😩
Other than that small detail, all’s well. My tapering is in full force and I’ll be doing relaxed 5ks tomorrow and Friday before volunteering at PR on Saturday. Plenty of yoga to be had too, although today I forgot to start my watch so it clearly didn’t happen! Sadly, I might need to do it again (it’s only a short Adriene one today!) How nerdy is that?! 😅
I hope everyone is safe and well. Coronavirus can take a running jump. It is not welcome. Scram. 👮♀️➡️➡️
I'm relieved to see there was no ban announced by the government this afternoon. Maybe it will still go ahead. Glad all is well, enjoy those last couple of easy runs, and then .... well, bring it onnnn! 😍
Morning Linda!!! Hope your stay fit and well - so nearly there! The vitality RWC is struggling for sure! My first run on 5th uploaded fine but my flipping HALF MARATHON is nowhere to be seen!
My week wasn’t great, as you know I was struggling but when push came to shove I made it round at Cambridge in 2:09:50! The last two miles were shuffling rather than running but I crossed that line on my feet and couldn’t be more pleased about it!
What I take away from it is that, aged 50 and only running for 13 months having never run before I did this thing, even with the lurgy. What I also know is that I can run a strong 6/7 miles maybe even 10 but those last 2/3 may be asking too much of myself.
Back to parkrun for now and I have Race for Life 10K in July and I’m happy with that.
I can see I might be tempted to do the Home Half again next year as it was amazing to run through my own City I know so well and see so many familiar faces in the crowd but I won’t be doing any half marathon tourism, that I do know!
All the best for this week, you’ve got this. And a heartfelt thank you for all your support. It’s genuinely appreciated. 💐💐💐
You need your Half Marathon badge Joster so we can all see how well you did...and though you struggled 2:09, bravo 👏
I can empathise with you, I at 47 found it just the same...I'd quite enjoyed the 10 mile runs, had done 3 and felt a sense of pride in that it was hard but achievable.
I though 13.1 would be the same but those extra few miles were an unpleasant struggle. I think HM distance is a different animal that takes more miles on the legs and a longer training time maybe...patience is a virtue and all that.
Enjoy your PR and 10K race, they sound much more pleasant 😉
The last 3k of almost any run (even a 5k sometimes) are almost always tough; something about expectations at the outset maybe. But for sure 10k is a nice distance after running a HM!
Cheers! Thank you for your kind words. How do I get a badge?!? Unpleasant struggle sums it up for the last bit. I knew I had to do it and probably could do it but it was half hour of not a lot of enjoyment on my part, but that’s not taken away from the overall enjoyment and sense of achievement. I may do it again next year, I may not, but I did it and that’s what I set out to do!
You should be so proud of that run Joster! We'll ask you about the 'no HM tourism' in a couple of days and see if you still feel the same way 😍. You can always send Vitality a screen shot to claim your 21.1k for vrwc; my strava data from the weekend hasn't appeared yet either 🙄. Have a nice restful week now and recover well.
Life is complicated at the moment, but I am trying to maintain a 3 run a week pattern of one short and quick (ish), one 5k+(with hills) and one longer run, all with a view to injecting a bit more pace into my running as well as increasing distance. VO2Max struck again on Saturday. I ran a quicker 2.5k, and VO2Max went up two points; never had a 2 point increase before!
Thanks Linda...and an out of the blue 10k PB by 56 seconds today. ....but VO2 max went down one 😂, which I guess means it didn't like the average heart rate needed to sustain the pace....that is bound to happen if you push the boundaries I guess, so not every VO2 max drop is bad news really.
Wooh! congratulations on the PB - funny how they come when least expected. Is it garmin? garmin hates long sustained effort of any kind when it's deciding which arbitrary VO2 max score to give out 🤣. chuck in some long slow easy 5ks and you can hang on to a good score 🙂
It is garmin. It likes short faster runs too...so your heart rate doesn’t have time to build up ‘too much’ while getting up to a decent pace; ‘too much’ in mr garmin’s opinion that is. I don’t use VO2 max as an indicator.., just a bit of fun. Watch does give me a load of useful stuff though; not knocking it!👍
Agree with everything you say there! It's now a game to predict what will have happened to my VO2 max score after a run - more often than not I'm right. Recently though my heartrate has been lower than I might have expected so have been caught out .... but maybe the monitor is going and I just need a new watch🤣
Nice one Linda! Are Bath talking about cancelling?
I have been taking a break from running this past week, my hip has been really sore! But I've been doing plenty of other stuff, hip strengtheners, the indoor bike is great, and I've signed up for swimming again and went twice last week. And I'm going to see a physio tonight - hoping she will have an idea of what's wrong and that she says it will be OK for me to go on long walks at least (I have a long walk plan in mind). I may well be deferring my Brighton Marathon place, but such is life!
Happy running, cross-training, and resting everyone!!! xxx
Bath sound like they really want to go ahead, so the lack of immediate ban of public events from today's govt meeting makes it more likely it will go ahead I think 🤞
Poor you and your hips though. Really hope the physio has some answers for you and that Brighton can still happen.
Bloomin' blisters eh? 7k sounds like a good test of your calf though. Fingers crossed your prompt response and resting have knocked that on the head before it became a major problem. May your seeds flourish and grow and get to see some prolonged sunshine very soon 🌞
I've already posted my race report about the Chester 10K so won't witter on 😉
I have everything crossed that your HM doesn't get cancelled...sad to say I think later in the season the concerns over Corona virus is going to mean some of our intrepid runners are going to be disappointed but as it's only 6 days until a group of you run in Bath, I really hope you're safe.
Fab news that you’re in such good shape for Bath Linda. I keep looking for updates about any cancellations but fingers crossed it’ll all go ahead for us 🤞
I’ve just posted about my ailments 🙄 Yesterday I was in the depths of despair thinking there would be no way I could run on Sunday. Today, an inner calm has fallen and I’m in “whatever” mode.
I’m not running at all until Sunday and then it’ll be everything crossed and double-crossed.
I’m so looking forward to meeting all my VRB’s and having a really good natter. No matter what happens to my legs, my tongue will always be ok 😂🙂
Have a good week everyone and nice healing vibes to anyone on the sickness/injury couch 🏃♀️🏃🙂
It's amazing how much injury can affect your mood as a runner - a real rollercoaster of emotions 🙄. We're all rooting for you IP - if positive vibes are all that's needed then we'll all be over that finish line before we know it!
Hello.. I'm running the London Landmarks HM... less than 3 weeks. Struggling a bit. Mouth full of ulcers and not sleeping. Mum died mid Jan and my plans sort of disintegrated.
Set out for 16k long run yesterday. Did 10k then was spent. Didn't want to have to run walk but am now considering it. Anyone got any advice? I'll crawl over the line if I have to! 😎
I am so sorry to hear about your mum. Many condolences. I wasn’t far off crawling over the line at Cambridge yesterday- and once I was over the line at the water station I was actually crawling!
Oh my, you're having a tough time, that must be really hard. You need to be nice to yourself. 10k is a great run when you're under the weather which it sounds like you are. Jeffing (run/walk) is a very respectable, and popular way to run a half marathon, so don't beat yourself up about it. Take a look at Jeff Galloway's website for more information jeffgalloway.com/ but in the meantime, do take care of you 💗
Aww Ang, I’m so sorry to hear about your mum. It’s tough isn’t it? I lost mine in October, and I’m running the Bath Half Marathon next Sunday in her memory. ❤️
I think run/walking your HM if need be will be totally fine. It’s a long way however you slice it, so you’ll have every reason to be proud of your achievement after 13+ miles. Good luck, you’ll be amazing. 👏👏
Keeping everything crossed for Hampton Court on Sunday - nothing said yet about any possible cancellation! Did a gentle 10k yesterday to test the foot a bit more - slight twinge from 6k so stretching and rolling but might just be hyper awareness. 3k planned for tomorrow just to add to the VRWC total, then start to get stuff sorted for weekend in London!
The 'token guy' in our pilates class is doing Hampton Court on Sunday too 🙂. Hope your foot responds well to all the attention it's getting🤞🤞🤞. I'm not really nervous or excited yet which is strange for me, but I've spent so long not daring to believe I'll get there that I think I'm still in denial 🙄. Maybe if I too start sorting my stuff out 😀
Hi Linda! Just wondered if you could guide pete1212 in the right direction regarding VRWC. He says he’s not on the team and wondered how to get on the team. I don’t know if he has signed up to it.
I've tagged him in the FAQ post over on Bridge so hopefully he will see it. Alternatively, you can send him to that pinned post as it should help. 124 members last time I looked!
Not anywhere near a half, but I'll also be a bit gutted if my Supernova 5k run is cancelled (looking likely, sadly) as it's one I really enjoy! Though I know I won't do it justice, it's a fast course and I always get a decent result (both times I've done it are the only times I've ever managed a 4.55min/ km pace in an event!) so, on the plus side, if it was cancelled it would save me from the disappointment of knowing I could do better...
It's so hard to know what's best isn't it. Good luck if it goes ahead - that'sa superfast time to beat. I think I've got to the point where I almost hope Bath is cancelled, but I just need to know so it can stop going round in my head!!!
Ach, that's Supernova at the Kelpies officially cancelled! Well, postponed... I'm secretly hoping it ends up back at the end of the year where it used to be! It's very chilly and dark then, but that's part of the fun of it 😄
