It’s good to finally be back after being away from the forum for some work and family commitments. Saturday was my longest run in some time at 24k. Mostly concrete sidewalks. Sore shins afterwards but all sorted as of this afternoon's short run. Totally unrelated is the pic above from my favorite trail run this last year at Rattlesnake point. It was really hard but so beautiful and this message from a fellow runner or hiker was the icing on the cake that day. I miss it. Hope to get out there again this summer.
How about you? How’s your week been? Any good/bad/interesting runs to report?
Sometimes we don't feel like putting a whole post up but just want to share something small, so this is a great place for doing that during the week. Please join in the discussion! If you're new or a lurker this is a great place to say a little hi without the pressure of a full post.
Don't forget, if you have an event coming up this coming month (or any changes to one you've mentioned before) let us know in the sticky post! 👇👇👇
Yesterday I ran the trails with the girls from running club who are marathon training. They have convinced me it will be a good idea to do a 20 miler trail event in early March so from now until then I am joining them on their marathon training plan.
It will work quite well for me as I was already adding distance every two weeks to my long runs in prep for my own races and I love the trails so it is just amending my mid week runs a little. February is going to be a challenging month but a great experience
Hello good sir! Same old, same old here. I'm back to four weekly runs and two cross training sessions with Friday as a day of rest and joy. I've got this idea of going beyond the marathon and that requires some stubborn work and time. Again, I train on my own, will run it on my own and l follow my own plan loosely based on more established plans laid out by more sensible and careful people. Let's see how that madness goes. 😉 Rattlesnake point? Priceless!
Nice! I was also toying with the idea of a 50k maybe. Just letting a few things on other fronts settle into place first. Hope your training goes well. It sounds like you’ve got your system nailed down.
Psychologically, l look at 50k as 'baby' ultra. I also consider marathons as 'training' runs. HM l simply look at as 'two or so hours'. That mindset l find incredibly important. I'm working on distances trying to figure out how to cover those blocks by running in London only, got very tech socks and a mid sixties Wilt Chamberlain jersey to see me through all that. We'll see. I'm half way through and feeling good. Need to learn how to implement short walking breaks before hitting the wall. Should be fun! 😀
Yes the 50 is definitely the entry point ultra distance. My younger friend finished a 100k recently. I don’t think I can manage the training time commitment for that distance yet, but maybe a 50. We’ll see.
50 is very doable, just a spin away from 42, 😉. 100? No. That's a full time job, part-timers and weekend warriors get hurt there. I saw the area in Morocco where they run through Sahara. That's serious business mate. Serious.
Sunday was my first attempt at 21.1k since the stress fracture. As I've already posted, it was mostly a run to forget- but I am over the moon at making that distance again and have absolutely no ill effects in my foot as far as I can tell. Looking forward to having some fun at LWR on Sunday (although the forecast is pretty dire), so probably just one midweek run for me besides that - going to keep my weekly distances as low as possible to be on the safe side. Happy drama-free running everyone (and healing vibes to those who can't).
Good to see you back here Decker - well done on your 24k and glad the shins settled down quickly. I've posted already but am another one heading up to London for the Winter Run 10k. Looks like a wet one at the moment but hey, the bling looks fantastic! 🙂
Don't worry, you'll be fine. I know those routes, even when windy the buildings will shield you and it will be mild, not so much of a winter run. Rain doesn't matter, you may get an odd shower, nothing torrential. 😀 Enjoy yourselves, you'll love it, the routes are great and it will be open for you only.
You'll be lifted up by the event, crowds and locations. Most of my weekly longer runs are done along the Thames and l zig zag through those historic sites, not once getting bored. Mental stimulus is crucial. I'd be amazed if you report back and say that some rain and wind ruined your hair. 😀 Go and have a blast Linda!
I’ve had a good week and am still on track for my March HM although my 14K was yuk. I hadn’t slept well the night before and felt it the next day. I have promised myself early nights this week as I have a 10 mile race on Sunday 🤗 but I read before sleep and sometimes I get a bit distracted in the tale 🙄
Just off today to get my annual orthotics check. I’m just hoping they keep going until after March!
Have a good week everyone and sending soothing wishes to those on the sickness/IC 🏃♀️🏃🙂
did my planned 12km on sunday but it was so so tough unlike last weeks 10km which was easy! you know its going to be tough when your 1km and your legs are already hurting and its been all down hill!
Put on a positive note i still managed it for my longest run in 11 months but was slow!
Wendesday i manged to make it to my running club night for the first time in over a year too amazing!
As well as normal swimming I didnt manage to make it to parkrun this week as well kids where being a pain!
I need to seriously get into HM training mode. Of course this meant that the weather gods finally dropped some snow on us. Fresh snow is really hard to run on. So I’ve just done 10 k at an indoor track instead. And am now wondering if I can trust the results on my app, as the pace it reports is uncharacteristically fast.
Well done on the 24k Decker! Concrete is one of the hardest (worst) surfaces to run on. I avoid it whenever I can! I’m taking 3 weeks rest due to a calf injury, with some cycling to keep me some fitness. I have some physio exercises to do, and weaknesses identified, so hopefully it will recover properly. 👍
Thanks Macmac, I try to not spend too much time on the concrete also, but this particular run was mostly sidewalks. I hope your calf heals up soon - it sounds like you are doing all the right things for a speedy recovery - well as speedy as something like that can be.
I'm keeping up my new years resolution and attending clubs bootcamp on Monday eve! Today I'm feeling( as someone in my group just posted!) a bit like I've been run over by a bus!😂😂 still tired from Sunday's race, backmarked club last night and going on a forest run tonight with 2 friends and dogs! Thurs rest night!! XC HM on Sunday!😂 have a great week everyone!😊xxx
Thanks Ali! I think you have a busier run schedule that the rest of us put together! I’m not surprised you feel tired! Enjoy the runs as you always do.
Did an 8 mile extremely muddy trail run on Sunday which was one of those horrid sluggish tired hungry messes that make you question your life choices! 🤣 Work running club was OK last night though. I've been suffering quite a bit with knee pain and am waiting for a physio appointment, but running doesn't seem to aggravate the injury as much as hoovering and gardening does! Have a race on Sunday if it still goes ahead (very stormy weather forecast), so just have to gloop ibuprofen gel on dodgy knee, strap it up and hope for the best! 😄
