Hello everyone! How's things?

I'm getting slowly back into running again, hopefully I can start building up my distance...at least, when the 5ks stop aching for days 😂 I know getting fitness back is quicker than building it in the first place, but oof I don't half feel it in the meantime...

I fell asleep last night listening to a BBC thing about barefoot running—and as the posessor of toes that splay wildly meaning my nails fall off after long distances—it has rather intrigued me whether I'd fare better without a shoe entirely. I am not sure how practical it is for city running, but it's certainly food for thought! Anyway, I thought it was quite an interesting programme, if you've half an hour to spare:

I hate shoes (and socks) but still I'd rather put up with them for running! I am ever on the quest for the shoes with the widest toe boxes though 😊

In other shoe-related news, my eldest nevvew is due to become 16 in a few weeks (how? Where did the time go??), and I have been charged with getting him a pair of running shoes!!! Naturally I have taken this mission extremely seriously, and spent far more than I would on myself 😄

My running has been going well, with a fabulous 35 km jaunt last week, and lots of strength work in the form of beach-starting a windsurfer in high winds 😜 Sadly the Grand Tour of Skiddaw just announced cancellation, but I have already been quietly planning a solo run home from Eastbourne in its place...

I've been looking at Altras. Trouble is I need to wear out all my other shoes first. Could be a while. My Terraultras have more room around the big toe but the same on the outside edge. Result is blisters as my toes have room to move about. Hoping my feet toughen up enough that I don't have to abandon the shoes. Meanwhile lots of surgical tape.

Same as you, I think Altras will probably be my next shoes! I have some Inov-8s (trail and road) and some Sauconys, and they are all nice and wide in the toes, and all have plenty of life in them 😊😊😊

Which Saucony’s? The kinvara 5 was my fave racing flat. They just kept getting narrower. I wore out my Saucony zealots now so need some new ones Which ones though 🤷‍♀️🙂.

I ran a marathon in the kinvara 5. It’s a lightweight racing flat but it was the only shoe that didn’t give me blisters. They were £28 😁

Saucony Breakthru 3, I got some in a size 7.5 a while ago, and I didn't feel they were quite comfortable enough to go as far in as a half marathon. And then I saw a pair size 8 on eBay, used twice, only £23 inc. postage, so I went for them! Officially the biggest pair of shoes I have ever owned 😄

I’ve worn out my Altra Torins. I love them to pieces but they gave me hellish toe blisters 🤷‍♀️😫. They’re a bit slippery too 🤨. I got them for £50 post race so can’t complain as I did so many miles in them. I wanted them for long runs but had to revert back to my nikes because of the blisters

I am going to go to a running shop and try out every flaming shoe 😃

Hi. I'm new here. I used the forums when I completed C25K June to August 2018 but gradually fell away as I felt I had nothing to offer new runners (yep silly me) and didn't know there were other forums!

So it's good to be back. I have decided to train for the Chelmsford half next March and only then found this forum. My running since lockdown has doubled and I've shaved 2 mins off my 5k time and almost broke 25 minutes this Saturday. I guess I'm a comfortable 10k runner now (PB last week 57.24) even though I have only run it a few times but have exceeded that distance just twice (11k and 18k) so I've a lot to do, so looking forward to some good support here and hope I can also offer some friendly encouragement too.

My main problem is cross training. Or the lack thereof. Need to massively up my game. Won't be easy as I dislike most forms. I'd rather be out running but accept that's not a good idea.

This week is going to be slow and low heart rate runs. I've run so hard since lockdown I need an easy week. Managed a slow 7k today and sang as I ran which is my guarantee I am not running too fast!

Regarding cross training, my suggestion is that you do not absolutely HAVE to cross train - it is very difficult to establish a habit of doing something you really dislike. BUT it is, as you said yourself, a good idea to cross train - lower impact activities that will positively impact your cardiovascular system and strength while allowing you time to recover from your runs. You say you dislike 'most forms' which suggests that there may be something you could enjoy? How about walking for example? Also, although not cross training, there are types of workout you can do that will improve your strength and agility while you run - hill workouts and running drills spring to mind, possibly you are already doing those?

Of course, if there are specific areas of weakness you need to address, such as those a physiotherapist might discover and direct you towards specific exercises for, it would be prudent to make yourself do them. But it looks to me as though you have your training well in hand and are making excellent progress xx

Hi! Thanks and yes I joined a couple of days ago. I apologise in advance for the nonsense I include on my Strava run titles but it keeps me amused!!

It's interesting that you mention walking because I do a lot of walking. Before lockdown my walking suffered as I didn't have time to do both, but have definitely done more recently. The week before last I did 28km of running and 20km of walking. Last week was 38km of running and 8km of walking so not quite as much but I always try and run out and walk back to increase my kms and include some low impact work.

I've lost over 3 stone since Jan 18 and I know my running has made me quite unbalanced, with my core, arms and upper body not really in the same shape as my legs so I'd like to address that. If I can do so by doing something I enjoy or at least don't hate! I did almost get into pilates (hated yoga!) before lockdown so maybe that's worth revisiting online.

I had another thought, have you tried PE with Joe Wicks? They are a lot of fun, and give you a proper workout! Lots of upper body stuff in there:

Thank you. I actually dug out my WonderCore 2 this morning and did a 25 minute workout. Can't say it was much fun but I'm glad I did it. And the Pilates centre I used before lockdown has offered me a £10 deal for 5 online classes over 7 days so I am going to give that a go too.

And yes I have done one PE with Joe with my boy. Thanks for reminding me though it's not just for kids!

I'm sure or I think I've found my perfect running shoes (nike vomero 14) plenty room in the toe box which I need as I have wide feet.

Been continuing to run 4 times per week and I now understand how we need to be patient with our running. I've only been doing it for 21 months but I can now see it getting better and today got a 10kpb of 1.01. 46sec.

Hope your running continues to build up nicely.

I tried on a vomero. I got the Pegasus though as it was cheaper. I love them but sadly too darned narrow Each iteration seems narrower than the last. Saucony kinvara went the same way 😤.

I resolved to stop posting for a while....because it was all whinge whinge whinge about my knee...totally boring for everyone, including me! Things really nose dived last week and I was seriously wondering about continuing to run. Painful run, problem migrating from the front of the knee to the back, limping back home and then getting calf cramps on top. All becoming a bit too much after 3 months off and on.

Anyway, I am just back from the physio, pleasantly full up with warm apple strudel and cream, knee beautifully taped up and the world doesn't seem so bad! I have resolved to keep up the exercises and beat this, or at least learn to live with it. I brought up the recently discussed subject of well cushioned shoes and advisability(or otherwise) for those with knee problems. The answer was that it is essentially a matter of foot posture. For people with higher arches, like me, the extra cushioning helps apparently.....so my Hoka Arahi purchase looks sound. Reducing my stride length is part of the package too, so hopefully all bases are covered. Slow 4k planned for Wednesday....got to start somewhere!

Thanks CC; just a bit of a dip, ....”.get a grip” called for. I have another appointment next week, and in the meantime flat white and triple chocolate brownie have reappeared. Maybe time to double the dose. Had my first Cafe Nero flat white for ages today too.. .... so not all bad😋

I've got the builders in (not a euphemism) and so have cheered myself up about all the mess and chaos with a Greggs breakfast and flat white two days running, it's been brilliant 😋

Hi Sqkr, I secretly have some new shoes coming! I haven’t posted about them yet because I want to wait until they get here. They’re Brooks Puregrit 5 trail shoes and I’m so excited to get them (c’mon postie, where are they?)

They were basically half price at my local running shop and I couldn’t resist. My old Asics trail shoes are still very comfy, but they’re sure to be past their best by now, especially after all my lockdown trail running. The only thing about the Brooks is that they’re a half size bigger than normal. I’m winging it basically - or my daughter will be getting them! She’s keeping her fingers crossed! 😅 Pic will follow when they arrive, assuming they fit, otherwise I’ll be cross! 🥺

Hi Sqkr and VRBs! As some of you know, I completed a 100 day run streak on Thursday 25 June with my 2nd HM of lockdown🙂 Hottest day of the year was not a good choice!🥵

I had a couple of days off running after that but I’ve restarted and I’m running every day again. To be honest it’s such a part of my routine now that I wouldn’t know what to do with myself otherwise!😊

I recently discovered the joys of Interval Training on the Nike Run Club app. I can’t believe I hadn’t tried it before in the 2 years or so I’ve been running.

I’m now working out how to fit it into my running, maybe at the weekends? That way I can do a long run on Weds (a non-working day for me now I’ve chosen to go part-time) short runs (2k) on working days, intervals one day of the weekend and a long run on the other. I’ll let you know how that goes.

I’m not training for anything specific but I’m certainly on the lookout for events as and when they open up again.

I got my internet back in after three weeks so I did my first Joe Wicks workout in ages. It felt really strange but I managed it 🙂💪

I’ve got an intervals run this morning so I’m off. The raining just stopped 🤗🏃‍♀️

For the first time since lockdown I’m feeling a bit yuk. My running isn’t helping, the garden isn’t helping and I just want to laze around which is so unlike me. But I’m giving in to it for a few days.

I had a bad run on Sunday, the first for ages. I was on a reduced mileage week and set out to do a 10K but almost from the start my body just wasn’t playing. I felt heavy, lethargic and slightly ill, so after 5K I stopped and came home ☹️ I just wasn’t in the mood.

I haven’t gone out again since but am planning a wee short one today. Did Pilates this morning so the warmup is done.

Peaks and troughs are surely natural! Everything's still so odd out there in the world, it must be having the strangest subconscious effects on us all —I think it's entirely fine and reasonable to just listen to your body and go with it.

I've decided to get some structure into my aimless lockdown running with an intervals run once a week. First time I jogged the recoveries and some of the recoveries were nearly as fast as the sprint sections. So this week I went for ultra differentiation and walked the recoveries. The sprint sections were faster and I was much happier.

And I need some new shoes. After 3 pairs of Nike Lunarglide 8s (discontinued eons ago) I just cannot find any more 8s or 9s on ebay or the whole of the www in my size. Eek - time for a change!

Good luck with the intervals. I am hopeless at them. I sprint the first few way too fast then by the last few I'm lucky to get to my 5k pace!!

Trying again! I too hate anything on my feet normally, but I'm very accident prone with my feet so I think I better stick with shoes. Shame, because that may be the perfect (indeed the only) solution to my dratted blisters. Good to hear you're finding the time and energy to get out running again - the aches will pass 😀

I've started HM training for October and am really enjoying my running at the moment, no niggles to be worrying about (but how long that will last is anybody's guess)! Never mind a haircut though, I want (need) a sports massage!!! Happy running everyone.
