My plan called for another 30+km run, so I decided to go down to the lake again. (The week before last I also did this) I am at the north end of Toronto and Lake Ontario is at the very South end. I also wanted to explore the Leslie Spit, which is a man made peninsula east of the Yonge st corridor I was coming down. Great views of the city from there. Last time I went up the West side. So getting down to the lake was pretty straightforward at around 16k, though i did have to dodge around another race event happening uptown. I really enjoy running along the waterfront, but I did hit some kind of wall this time at around 22, where everything began to hurt and I got slower and slower. Was crawling by the end. π Not sure if it was because I worked late the night before, or that there were too many miles in this week, or if was just mental. Nothing was sharp pinpoint pain, just overall. I did not have my Kinvaras either as I am trying to save them for the race. So I used an older pair with around 750 on them. I eventually got to 32, but my poor planning had me way off in an industrial zone, I just wanted to drop down next to one of the warehouses and snooze. I stopped, sat down for a bit and regrouped then walked another 20 min or so. Tried a slow 2k jog after that and managed to get back to civilization and a coffee shop to get back some calories. Iβm not sure what to put this down to. I was well fuelled and hydrated throughout. Maybe just a bit of burnout. Was thinking of maybe taking it easier this week, to see if that helps at all. Have a shorter 21 this week so that should help too. Then it is a 34 and tapering.

A rougher run down to the lake
Bad stuff happens sometimes right? No apparent reason. Maybe just resetting your expectations. Next one will be better π
Sorry to hear that was a tough one. Hopefully the next will be better. A cut-back week may be what is needed. I can't imagine how hard it is in these latter stages of the marathon plan but you are getting it done. I'm glad you didn't lie down for a snooze in the industrial zone - that could've ended badly. One of the 50kers on the race said the same thing where for the majority of her race, she just wanted to lie down beside the trail for a nap. There is something's in the air....or just some really tired runners who have been giving it their all in training...ya, that's likely it.
You've got this. You've dialled in your nutrition and hydration; we have complete faith in you.
Thanks Sask. Yes tomorrow is a new day. Now I just have to convince myself to actually dial back...
No kidding π. Think of it as a preview for your tapering. Maybe it'll help with the taper terrors that are bound to happen π±
Haha yeah maybe! I did ease off this morn and did 9 instead of 11 and went slower. Why do I feel guilty? π
I know what you mean. It is hard for rule followers to stray from the plan. I tried to embrace my inner free spirit the last few weeks. I'm not sure if it helped or hindered in the end, but sometimes you just have to do what you have to do. Listen to your body over a piece of paper.
Sorry it was so tough going. I'm amazed that you managed to push ahead. Like you say, tapering isn't far away, so I'm sure you'll manage your last couple of long runs.
You got it done though! πͺπ»π some are just really tough. Late night probably didn't help at all, next thing after fuel and fluids is good sleep. ππ»
I have often looked longingly at the grass and wanted to lay in it, even if I'm not running
bad sleep or lack of sleep is debilitating - I used to suffer a lot from a sort of insomnia (getting to sleep fine but waking up at about 3 am and can't get back to sleep) and it has a bad effect on the body
I would do what you can to make sure you get a few good nights' sleep in
That looks like a stunning route, Decker. β€οΈ And as for dialling back a wee bit - this is never not a good idea. Training for a big race is tough; sometimes you just have to listen carefully to your body and see if it needs an easier week? The main thing is to not sweat it, as you know. Bad runs just happen; you are such an experienced runner, just shrug it off, have a lighter week and youβll be good as new I reckon! All the best to you. x
Sounds like a great route! Pity about the running out of energy but not sure why you did if you were fuelling as you went. Tiredness iβd Say. We need our sleep! π.
I keep a packet of hula hoops for an emergency snack. Blimey they donβt half hit the spot π.
Rest up and go again πͺππββοΈ
It was a great route through the city and along the water. The water is so nice after all the concrete. I had a solid breakfast, and went through 3 Cliff gels and most of my water pack, plus my Nuun bottle and half a bag of trail mix. So all I can think of is sleep and stress. Ah well, I feel good today so Iβll head out and see how it goes on a shorter one.
I bet youβll be fine πππββοΈ
