A successful long run

So I’m trying to increase my mileage now ready for April’s race. I managed a 10 and an 11 mile run last week.

Yesterday was my club’s Winter Solstice run. 34 miles in total and you could drop in and drop out as you like. I decided to join for the middle section - the highlight of the run - the trail up to Eston nab (photo). It was torrential rain the whole way but I love running in the rain so I thought it was perfect, mud and all. Then, after a change of socks and putting road shoes on, I thought I’d add on and see how much more I could do. I was delighted to be able to run all the way back to Yarm which got me to just shy of 19 miles, although very stoppy starty. It was an amazing run with friends with laughs and smiles all the way. Ok, maybe a grimace near the end - but I loved it so much. All things considered, it was relatively comfortable too. I feel hopeful that I can reach 20 road miles non stop well before race day. Keep your fingers crossed for me everyone 🤞🏽

Nearly 20 miles! Well done.

I know what 21 km feels like and I have huge respect for those who can do the longer distances.

I bet up would be able to smash a full!

Possibly. But I'd need to work up to it gradually.

I replied to this earlier but I don’t think it posted for some reason! A marathon is significantly, massively harder than a half but I think you’re a very strong runner and you’d nail it, Paul! Just planting that seed there 😜

As I replied earlier. I'd need to work myself up to it.

I had already set myself a possible target of the Metric Marathon (26.2km) in the coming months.

I think I’ve developed a good insight into this!

Basically, any run will be really hard if you’re not prepared for it. A chap at work who’s in his twenties returned to 5k after a break of a couple of years and was hobbling around for three weeks afterwards. Likewise, attempting to run a Marathon right after HM training would be very hard (and foolish). However, with the right training, a Marathon is doable.

Thanks so much I57! Getting the mileage back up has been somewhat easier than I thought. I might pay for it soon. Time will tell. Best wishes!

That sounds like a great, fun, run there Tasha.

I guess you’re aware that, with that sort of distance, you’re already at the point where you could, at a push, go out and run a Marathon. That suggests to me that you’ll be in great shape by the time of the Manchester Marathon.

Thank you SkiMonday. It has given me lots of confidence that’s for sure, although I can have some really bad run days so if I get one of those on race day, it’ll be even tougher. But I’ll try my best 👌🏽

I guess all you can do is train for the event then do what you can on the day.

Sounds lush! I like a cool wet run & I bet the trail & company made it special.I wish there were such a thing as shoes which changed from trail to road shoes at the push of a button!
