Fed up with Facebook

This was my post yesterday. I amended it after it was pointed out that it read like I was unhappy with my pace. That said I am fed up with people giving advice in the guise of an opinion. I wasn't asking for advice. As a result I am never posting on Facebook again unless it is post event. Maybe I am being over sensitive, defensive but it's starting to affect my mental health for that reason I have made this decision.

Those figures did look a bit odd, so I checked them.

11 miles in 3:27:29 is an 18:52 pace

13 miles in 4:26:33 is a 20:30 pace

So it looks like the longer run was at a much slower pace as would be expected. Looks like just a miscalculation or misunderstanding to me.

Of course Murphy's law will mean that my cakculations are wrong too ;-)

Strava said my moving time was for the 11miles was 3:27:29nd the average pace 19:01 (auto pause is off) . The 4:26:33 was the Swansea Half marathon official chip time but the pace (17:16) was from Strava on the day. That is why I don't always trust Strava!

I realise that you just want to vent! But I have to say that it is very very very difficult to avoid misunderstandings on social media - and in fact in all types of communication including face-to-face talking!!! And I notice that you did actually ask a question, and you provided quite a few figures, so it does kiiiiiind of look as though you're asking for advice 😉💗

However, you are not alone in finding that social media can have adverse affects on mental health, and I think it is very sensible of you to take a break from Facebook.

I hope you will continue with your running plans!! xxx

Well I probably did ask a question but it was not asking for advice not as I see it. If I had been asking for advice I would have asked how do I improve my pace but I didn't. It was a simple question but I did clarify in my amendment what I actually wanted to know. Thank you. I will still be on Facebook just not posting unless it is post event like when I return from Swansea Half.

That sounds very frustrating Pippa.

I came off Facebook two years ago exactly because I recognised the effect it had on my emotional health, and that was before I started running!

Personally I find the support on here is amazing and so much useful advice.

Sounds like you're doing the right thing by taking a break,

It is because most of the people are very supportive. As far as I am aware the person who replied to my post is not on this forum. One of the groups I am a member of is my Thursday morning running group Facebook but that is a closed group which gives info about the next session.

I can understand you giving Facebook a break. I find it a very negative and corrosive environment which does nothing for me. So many posts there are so miserable and full of doom and gloom.

Thank you. I scroll through but I am never posting anything. I am going to do my own thing. I am doing Swansea Half in three weeks. When I return I will be training for the Yorkshire Marathon. None of this I have mentioned on Facebook. Someone told me that the less people who knew my plans the better. It will make it easier to train without the negativity and the 'you should do this or that. I know my body. One doesn't know what one is capable of until one tries.

I agree with you that you know your own body and mind better than the Facebook community. It's best to work out what works best for you and stick to it. A large part of distance running is what we do with the mind.

It has been suggested to me that a long run should be 1min/mile slower than your hm or marathon pace. This is so you build up a good aerobic base and stamina to run further. On race day your pace may well be faster once you add in the adrenaline effect but that is great as you would want a good time. However, I have also had slower event times than in training due to lots of people walking and having to dodge past. The important bit is to make sure your training runs are at an easy conversational pace for you, that way you will also avoid injury. Hope that helps.
