"negative" distraction??

I have been really focused on run/walking long distances at a specific slow pace over the past few months - slowly building my longrun distance and using shorter mid week runs as "experiments" related to slow longruns. But this weekend I decided to give parkrun a bit of a blast and also to try to keep up with runners in my runners and walkers club on Sunday. parkrun was OK but I am well aware that all this slow run/walking is affecting my ability to run shorter distances - and really I should not have even attempted to run non-stop with these other runners today :) . I need to get my focus back until I have completed this marathon - and then I can see about re-learning how to run 5k distance :(

I had found the same thing when I was doing a run/walk training for HM a few years ago. The last 2 years I've focussed on continuous running but was not feeling strong for my long run last week so thought, why not do it as a run/walk. It didn't go well. Of course I had altered my run portion to much longer than I used to do given all my runs are continuous on this plan, but I was shocked at how difficult it was. I think the body really adjusts to what ever technique you are using and trying to switch it mid training plan isn't going to fly.

Definitely stick with your main focus right now, which is your marathon training, but there is no doubt you'll be able to get back to running 5k again once you can shift your focus and recondition your body.

I did (that was when I found the app and these amazing forums) but I had had an break of no running due to having major surgery and just prior to that had trained for 4 months for a full walking marathon. It is amazing the different muscles you use. You might find doing an abridged version of C25k may be all you need where you don't necessarily do all the runs each week, but one from each week since you'll be in great shape and just have to retrain your body to a different style of running again. That being said, there is nothing wrong with doing C25k again. You know what to expect. You're in great shape, and it can be a great gradual transition back to a continuous 5k.

I ageee with you Baz about your marathon focus Once off the agenda you can turn your attentions to the 5k. I am doing that at the moment but can’t say I’m thrilled at the prospect of fast fives. I don’t like them at all but am taking my medicine 🤨. If it makes us stronger then all to the good
