Half Marathon maybe

Hi fellow running buddies. Started running again last October and did the c25k programme after watching my son complete the Cardiff Half Marathon. My original aim was just to see if I could run but with the long term goal of running in the Swansea bay 10k next September. I have arthritic knees so have to be careful. I took about 14 weeks to complete c25k by the middle of January and I've also done 13 parkruns now. Over the last few weeks I've increased the distance of my weekly long run and did a 10k on Tues. My son was intending to do the Swansea half marathon in June but is now injured and won't be able to. I was thinking of taking his place so was wondering if it would be possible. What do you all think? Would appreciate any advice and tips.

Hi Dave! Welcome to the forum!!!

My question back at you is: do you WANT to do a half marathon?

If you do, then I see no reason why not. I think the Swansea half is quite late on in June, right? So you have enough time to work your way slowly up to that distance. A half marathon can be great fun, and is a wonderful achievement I definitely recommend! 😊😊😊

We've been experimenting with a gentle half marathon training plan over the last few months (the last half marathon is this weekend!). I think you may find the most recent version of my plan useful, have a look here:

docs.google.com/spreadsheet...

Hope to see more of you around here xx

I do definitely want to do it. Just not sure if my knees do! Thanks for the link, I'll read that when I get a chance

Definietely possible. Just keep graudally building up the distance. No need to get up to HM distance prior to the run. 10-11 miles should be sufficient in terms of training. It will give you something extra to acheive on the day.

Listen to your body. If you have to miss runs do, but try and miss the short runs and save yourself for the long runs if possible.

I always think of the Thomes Jefferson quote when pushing myself: “If you want something you've never had you must be willing to do something you've never done.”

I’d say it’s possible if you start increasing distance slowly. Good luck!

Hi Dave, well I and my other half are doing Swansea half marathon, I certainly won’t be in a hurry to get round, it could be rather hot too. Agree with Whatsapp , 10-11 miles is plenty in training, (I generally like to get 12 miles under my belt as my last long run - but that’s just me)

It’s also nice to save a bit for the day, makes it more special.....

I’m a slow steady plodder and I’m currently doing 10-12k once a week (I run twice a week) and I’ve plenty of time to get up to 20k (12 miles) before Swansea

I’m sure you’ll be able to do it

I intend to only run twice a week also as I cycle as well. Which means parkrun on Sat morning and a longer run on a Tuesday. Did 10k yesterday and will be increasing this run by 1k/1.5k every week hopefully

Hi Dave. I graduated November 2018 and I reckon I could do a HM now if I put my mind to it? You'll be fine! 😁
