So im a healthy 49 year old, 2 years ago i went for a regular eye exam, had a basic eye scan etc, and the woman seemed to see something on it and asked me to look at a amsler grid and asked if everything looked ok. It did and she said fine. I had an operation on my left eye when i was a teenager as it was a lazy eye and she put what ever she seen down to that.
Anyways a year later i had another scan, this time a more comprehensive on as part of my eye exam, and by this time i had researched what the amsler grid was for and was worried about AMD. Anyways the scan came back ok and was told i dont have AMD.
Then 6 months ago i started noticing that if i look ahead a straight line that was off to the bottom left would appear "kinked" for a split second and then straigten up when i looked directly at it. So i looked at the amsler grid and sure enough there is a little bent line in that postion. So i went for another scan and they compared it to the last one and said it was the same and to try not to worry.
The kinked line went away, but now 7 months later is back and in the same place....its really hard to explain the line if i watch football (soccer) for example one of the lines has a little kink in it but if i focus on it, it will go straight.
Does the early stages of AMD come and go like this? i would assume if it was AMD, it would not have gone for 6 months but im very concerned.

I remember being in your position and worrying about the same things. 7 years on I still have 6/6 vision in that eye after some 30 or so injections of Eylea at Moorfields. The other eye which remained fine all the while suddenly has kinks so badly it is now pretty useless. Will have to see if Eylea can sort that one out too. You need a hospital referral sooner rather that later.
No you most probably will not be blind in 5 years. Just stay on top of it. Take AREDS 2 vitamin supplement. My right eye diagnosed with dry macular degeneration 6 years ago. Eyesight in that eye very good. I'm 81 male with wet AMD in left. Don't lose sleep over this.
Thanks for your reply, i am beyond terrified....At the moment its basically a tiny little kink on one line on the amsler chart, but reading online its going to maybe turn into me loosing most of my central vision
Hi. It might not be AMD. I have been treated for wiggly lines a couple of times with eyelea in my left eye. I had cnv with a intra retinal leak. The fluid was causing the distortion and the eyelea calms it down. I have had 2 sets of 3 injections in the past 3 years. In both cases I knew straight away something was wrong but it was not showing up on the scans. Only when it grew worse did it show up. The injections did not completely straighten the lines for me but almost. It’s only noticeable if I think about it or cover my good eye. It’s not great to have this worry but it is certainly manageable. Just be vigilant and if it gets worse go straight to eye casualty. Well that’s what I would do. Hope this helps.
So i went for my eye exam, and they did all the 3D scans etc....basically nothing has changed over the past year and a half. They were not coencerned at all...he showed me all the scans in depth and showed me the very very slight defect in the left eye that was more than likely causing my little wavy line.
I pushed if this was anything to worry about and he said no, but they will keep monitoring it every year.
I did ask about going onto Areds2 and he said it definatly wont hurt and to keep wearing sunglasses etc when im outside etc.
My first symptoms were the same as yours at pretty much the same age. In one corner of a spreadsheet I would see a slight kink. With me it was due to dry macular degeneration beginning to develop. However, I started taking Macushield, eating my greens and protecting my eyes from sunlight with reactolite glasses. Pretty much no change for over 10 years. I have now developed wet AMD and need injections but with the newer Vabysmo (faricimab) injections I am up to 11 weeks between injections and still fine for reading and driving. I'm now 67.
Thanks for your reply.... we're your diagnosed with AMD when you first noticed it? I'm being told it's not AMD .. but I have my doubts... I'm talking areds2 and eating greens and sunglasses also
Yes, I was diagnosed as AMD. You may well have something else but even if it is AMD there are good treatments for wet and they are getting close to a treatment for dry. Like you I was really worried at the diagnosis but 4 years after developing wet AMD, I have remarkably good vision. Taking the precautions regarding diet and sunglasses will hopefully protect your eyes for a long time to come.
