partial thickness macular hole

Helllo.

Just wondering if anyone has been offered vitrectomy surgery for a partial thickness macular hole.

I had fairly good vision recovery after vitrectomy for a full thickness macular hole in my left eye.

I now have a partial thickness hole in my right eye. NHS eye hospital tell me surgery is not offered unless full thickness. Problem is my loss of vision is significant even if it is (only) partial thickness.

Grateful for any similar situation xperiences.

I am actually having a virectomy 3/6 for my right eye then about 6 weeks later my left eye. Mine is for a wrinkle also called a macular pucker. I am quite anxious about having this done. My dr assures me that I should gain back 50% of the vision I have lost. Also there is a good possibility I will no longer need injections and a reduction in the prescription eye drops I take. I have held off having this for about 4-5 years but it’s time. I will have an air bubble for healing different than a gas bubble so I won’t need to look down afterwards how was your surgery and what can I expect thanks

Hi thom3patty. I think there are many comments and experiences on this forum on this procedure.

While it’s not something I would look forward to again, I can honestly say the actual procedure wasn’t painful or difficult to cope with once I relaxed into it. As far as I can remember the only slightly uncomfortable bit was the removal of the sticky sterile field they put over your face. As mentioned elsewhere, my particular surgeon had done research to say prolonged face down recovery wasn’t always necessary - just the one night for me.

6 weeks or so recovery was just a bit tedious - and then my glasses didn’t work as I’d had a semi corrective cataract surgery done at he same time.

Hope all goes well and try not to worry. I love the look of horror on friends faces when I explain how I had the contents of my eyeball sucked out.😱😂

hi, I am interested in this as I am to have a vitrectomy tomorrow. I had cataract surgery last week that had complications when part of the cataract went behind my eye. So a vitrectomy to take the piece out and then a lens replacement. How painful was it after the op and how long did it last?

Thanks

Hi Koalajane. Sounds like your problems are more complex than mine. My vitrectomy was performed privately- mainly for speed as I understand sight recovery is more likely if done sooner. The surgeon advised cataract surgery at the same time as cataracts very often develop post vitrectomy.

Thankfully my man didn’t believe in lengthy face down recovery posture - just for the night following surgery. Having an eye full of gas for a few weeks is visually distracting until it resolves - bit like wearing swimming goggles half full of water.

Not thrilled with the prospect of repeating it but wondered if anyone had had a vitrectomy for partial thickness hole.

I had surgery for a stage 2 macular hole and cataract back in November. I was fortunate and had it done privately. I had a gas bubble and was face down for a week, which was fine as I hired a chair. The gas bubble wasn’t much fun and it took 7 weeks to disappear. Absolutely no pain, although I did get a lot of headaches for several weeks. I still have some central distortion but it is much improved. Sometimes I feel like there is something in my eye or it doesn’t open enough - bit weird. I’m not sure what stage 2 means compared compared with yours, but the Specsavers optician did tell me to get it done ASAP.

Let me know if you need any more info and best wishes.

Glad you had a reasonable result. I’ll have to get back to Vision Express to see what’s happening with my other eye.
