Hi, I’m extremely worried, my 21 year old daughter has been diagnosed with impending macular hole in the left eye. They’ve said they’re very concerned as it’s very very rare for someone of this age to have this.
The retinol eye specialist is assessing my daughters eye X-rays in the morning and letting me know the plan for her. Has anyone else had this?

I have had a macular hole. An imending macular hole sounds like a very early stage. So I can maybe give you some reassurance that the earlier it is diagnosed the better the chances of a good outcome. If I can help any further once you know what the specialist advises let me know.
Thank you for letting me know. That’s reassuring to know. I’ve never heard of it before. I find out tomorrow what’s going to happen. Do you mind me asking how old you was when you got it?
hi, just saw your post. I'm w a y older than your daughter. my mac hole was full depth but if its found early they told me it's 99% repairable. I presume by now you have answers. If not do not worry the op (local) is just fine. in fact I found it interesting. As I say early detection is vital and curable. I wish you and your daughter good luck. please tell us the outcome.

Hi MiltchI am a lot older than your daughter and had one in each eye , one twelve months after the other. I am in Australia and in each case the operations went well but I had to do special posturing ( keeping head down for 22 out of 24 hours a day for seven days) I think this was the worst part for me but was about ten years ago and have been told new advances don’t require this now. It is very important to follow doctors advice afterwards to ensure healing. I am sure a.l will go well.
Thank you all for your responses, like you all say you’re a lot older than my daughter, and it really upsets me to know she has this at her age. If you see my other posts, we’ve been going through a terrible time with my father from covid, and now this from no where.
The specialist yesterday has done a blood test for diabetes and blood clotting as this can be caused by either of those.
He’s done 3 further eye scans and he’s signed her off work for 2 weeks, to rest her eyes. He’s writing her a letter to show her boss.
He’s referring her to the professor eye specialist here next Thursday, they’ll decide between them the best way to treat her.
We’ll know more next Thursday.
Because it’s been found at stage 1, cystoral macular Edema, they have time to decide the best way to treat it.
Sometimes it’s best to leave it and monitor it very closely as it can clear by itself in 50% of cases, or it can develop into stage 2, which is normally when it would be operated on, but he might say next week, he wants to operate that day. Stage 3 and Stage 4 are severe holes and are not successfully treated, so they’re very aware the urgency of doing the right thing for her for the best outcome. X
