ozurdex injection

I went to my eye clinic today and saw a different consultant.

she said although my macular oedema is not getting any worse it is not improving. She suggested I have an Ozurdex injection. We got to talking about cataracts and she looked at mine and said they were moderate. She then said she would make me an appointment for her cataract clinic and that 2 weeks before the op she would give an Ozurdex injection.

I didn’t think that cataract ops were offered to people with macular oedema but she is the consultant.

Any thoughts please

Hi. I asked my consultant regarding the high pressure in both of my eyes. (I also have DME) she said Cataract operations could be done,

I found these snippets by googling it.

Patients may receive cataract surgery if diabetic macular edema is managed pre- and post-surgery

Once the diabetic retinopathy is quiescent and the macula is dry, cataract surgery can be planned. Intraocular lens (IOL) preference should lean to monofocal, toric, or sometimes accommodating IOLs.

Take care

thanks for your reply. I had thought I would not be offered it so jumped at the offer

it can also be done if there is macular oedema present so not dry as such it really depends about risk and benefit.

also regarding high pressure cataract surgery can be beneficial especially if high pressure is caused by narrow angles as the cataracts could open up the angles and therefore help eye pressure to go down.

hi there yes Cataracts are offered to those with macular oedema however I do see where the concern can be as cataract operations can cause macular oedema. Ozurdex also known as dexamethasone is only available at them moment ( though this will change soon) to those who have had cataract surgery. This I would think is a good cause of action since dexamethasone is a steroid implant ( given exactly the same way as an anti vegF) rather than an anti vegF and will last 3 months in your eye giving it time to heal without needing another cause of injections. I wish you well

thank you. The consultant said she would give the Ozurdex injection a couple of weeks before the cataract op

I have Diabetic Macular Oedema in both eyes and had cataracts in both eyes. Cataract in left eye was the more advanced to the point where although the DMO was responding to Ozurdex the developing cataract was offsetting that improvement. Shortly after end of second COVID lockdown they gave me a further Ozurdex implant and then a few weeks later I had cataract operation. Sadly the eye has stopped improving from the Ozurdex so have not felt the full benefit from the Cataract operation.Alun
