Ozurdex and cataract.

Hello all. I had CRVO aroind nine months back. After 3 eylia injections, I had my first Ozurdex for macular edema. The vision has neen improving with every injection and follow up 3 days after Ozurdex was very encouraging. My doctor told me about cataract as one of the side effect. I want to know how much time or after how many Ozurdex injections does cataract appear. Hope it does not happen after first injection. Thank you in advance for your thoughtful replies.

Hi petr, no-one can say if/ when cataract will occur. Everyone is different. I have seen research that says it always causes one but also research that says much lower odds.

I am on my second ozurdex implant and so far am fine. So it didn't happen after my first one !

I know it's not nice to think about but it is treatable easily if it happens and without the implant we would have a worse outcome ( at least, my oedema after brvo was only getting worse despite 23 inj).

The second implant completely cleared my oedema and it seems to be holding.

All good wishes to you going forward x

Thank you for your reply. It is really helpful. Should I worry about eye pressure. I am taking drops as precaution. But otherwise it feels good and vision is also very clear.

Hi petr, as I understand it raised IOP is common with either inj or implants but you only need timolol drops if your IOP is definitely raised. Your Dr would have measured this and prescribed accordingly.

The drops reduce it and stop it going high again. Don't think they are given just as a precaution but I could be wrong. Maybe your drops are for something else? Eg soothing for dry eye ( I have those too).

Unless you have eye pain or visual problems I wouldn't worry.

Hi Petr,

Sorry to learn about your retinal vein occlusion and macular oedema.

Good reply from eyesright; as she says it is difficult to know if and when a cataract will occur.

If you would like to see the Macular Society's factsheets about both conditions, please email your request to help@macularsociety.org

Best wishes

I am on my second Ozurdex and it works well for me to keep the eye dry, I have had no hint of cataracts. I don't think it is a set time anyone cab predict. It probably is a if/ when on a case by case basis. Good Luck.
