Hello Specta,

I am sorry to read about the reaction of your eye to the injection.

It would be wise to ring the eye clinic and feed this back to them to gauge their response and see what they would suggest.

I am also copying the link for our factsheet concerning pain post injection:

Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of any further help.

The Macular Society helpline is open 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday on 0300 3030 111.

Kind regards,

Had the same after my 5th eylea injection, very uncomfortable. Hospital unconcerned, just said use drops and paracetamol . Have since been told by consultant to use ibuprofen , this the nurse had said not to use!

Hi

I also have had this reaction on at least 5 out of 30 injections. My Consultant says it is a sensitivity to either the Iodine or the anaesthetic drops, it seems to dose related, if for any reason there is delay and they have to keep topping me up it is more likely to happen. I also use paracetamol and sterile single dose Viscotears. ( these can be brought over the counter ) An antihistamine like Piriton can also help.

Having said this I now just cover my eye with a eye pad, as blinking is so painful and take myself off to bed and by the next morning. It feels a lot better.

All the best, I hope you get some benefit from your treatment, please post again if you find any other strategy that helps.

That's interesting, in particular the Piriton. The eye pad, when I suggested to the doctor doing the procedure was poo pooed , "will create infection". They all seem to sing from different sheets!

Hi specta, along with irritation by the iodine etc one cause of watery eyes is that they are dry.

I have a prescription for hylotears which is very good. Of course you can't use it for at least 5 days after inj. I am very careful now to keep eye away from draft etc until can use the drops again.

My clinic now give soothing drops after inj and I have found this helps enormously.

Personally I wouldn't use a pad but if you really have to make sure pad & water sterile, single use only.

I would definitely ring your clinic though - when my eye felt swollen it turned out my IOP was raised and I had to have drops for that which I have to take even on inj days. It's a potential side effect of Lucentis, don't know about eylea.

Let us know how you get on x

Hi

The sterile eye pad is provided by the hospital and the single use sterile Viscotears is similar to haylotears, and although I have paid for my own, l have aiso been offered it by the hospital immediately following an injection.

The symptoms have been the same, whether I have Lucentis or Eylea and I have been told are not due to the injection but the chemical irritant properties of the iodine and or anaesthetic on the surface of the eye, to which some people are extra sensitive.

I've never thought of my self as a sensitive soul! Hey Ho.

It surprises me all the little variations between clinics. Shields /pads / drops ,/ chairs / benches /drapes / having someone with you .....or not !

Also some of the advice in the manufacturers notes / Royal College Opthalmologists guidelines which aren't complied with.

I guess we get what we are given ha ha.

At least we are getting it and for free at point of need x

Thanks for all your replies, I took painkillers laid in a darkened room and by the following morning it was feeling somewhat easier. On reflection I think I had a reaction to a cream they put in post injection which hadn't been used previously. Day 2 today still feeling sore and blurry but improved. Thanks again.
