Bleed during Eylea Injection

Hi, hubby had his 17th Eylea injection yesterday for BRVO. Good Covid arrangements in place and he was the first appointment 👍👍 or so we thought. He zoomed in after a temp check but patients came out and he didn’t appear! The usual excellent nurse injectors were there, who fill him with much needed confidence but for some reason he was held back and then sent to a small procedure room at the back of the clinic. Needless to say, the Injector was unknown to him and she burst a blood vessel. When he finally appeared, his eye was a mess, it was more or less closed, it has hurt now for 24 hours so taking paracetamol, the eye ointment was dried down his face and the iodine was all over the place. I always check who is the Injector after five bad experiences but I was outside. His record is marked to say no trainees but I fear the Injector was experienced. This morning he has just one massive bubble, his eye is slightly open but painful. Has anyone had a burst blood vessel and how long did it take to settle down?

The good news, it’s 4 months since his previous injection and his vision loss is 30% loss in total and 10% since the previous visit.

Cheers

Hi smiler. I think you need to contact the Eye Hospital on the emergency number that you should have been given. Get it checked out asap if only to have your minds put at rest. Let us know how it goes. Good luck. xx

The Clinic have said it will take a week to recover. No other advice but keep using the ointment for two more days. Cheers

Hi

I had a bleed on the last but one injection and it did take about a week to clear. Stay well

Hi, yes even the most experienced can hit a blood vessel as they cant be seen. I've had a few and the worst took over a week. Pain subsided as it cleared up but was uncomfortable for ages. I used a new bottle of sterile no preservative soothing drops to gently clean lashes etc and get rid of blood and grunge that had run down my face ( if you're brave check out the pic on an old post of mine from a few years back lol).

If pain increases or takes longer than a week to clear ring your clinic.

Best wishes for the inj working again.

Yes I had one once several years ago, I looked like Dracula, I rang the eyeline and they reassured me that it would gradually go and it did. As Eyesright so wisely says it can happen to the best of nurses, drs, to accidently hit a vessel.

Thanks for posting Eyesright, your responses are always most informative and supportive.

I checked out your bleed, Mr B’s not quite as bad as yours but don’t they look a mess and are very worrying?

I’m working on how to restore his confidence in the procedure for next time! I think in hindsight, he was in Clinic alone, he didn’t get one of the Injectors he has confidence in and because I didn’t ask, he wouldn’t think to. He would be in a blue funk and I knew that.

How have we got to 5 years so quickly, since you are Mr B started your journey together. Take care of yourself.

Yes, one of my docs said being tense makes any bleed worse so I try to relax, easier said than done and still always get the panic last few seconds. He's doing really well though, good time between inj.

I know, 5yrs, crazy isn't it?! I'd had unrecognised symptom for about year before my referral too. Not sure if they'll give me another implant so might be back to inj. Cant say I'm looking forward to it but grateful for the option. My hubby had brao 23yrs ago before treatment was available and has no useful sight in right eye. Just got back from eye clinic where they checked out the bad cataract in his left eye. Good news there's nothing else going on in his eye so now just a matter of waiting on the cataract op list ( we checked private option and their local places have all been commandeered for NHS- where I had mine done is now full of dementia patients) - might be Aug/Sept, he's been told not to drive and he won't but I'll have to keep an eye on him around the house to make sure he's safe :)

Give your hubby my best wishes.

I was a bit confused if it was you as you always used to sign off " the smilers". :)

You have both been through a lot of treatments and yes, tough though it is, there are treatment options. We do work on keeping as calm as possible and hopefully next appt I'll be back at his side.

Memory hiccup, lockdown mindset we will return to our chosen name

Take care

I have CLL and macular degeneration and have been taking the Eyelea shots for a couple of years. About every third or fourth shot, I get some bleeding because the doc said it is hard to put a needle in the eye and not occasionally hit a vein. But nothing major like you describe has happened.
