Has anyone else had a reaction to eylea? I have had a reaction to the past two injecitns of eylea. I have a friend taking the same drug treatment for the same condition, who had the same reaction this past month. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

What reaction is it?

Are you sure it's a reaction to eyelea and not the iodine used to clean the eye?

The latter is more likely and can be alleviated if they rinse better. If necessary they can change to chlorhexidine.

Dry eye can also be a factor - there are a number of soothing drops which can help.

If you Google eyelea you should find datasheet on side effects which would include info on allergy etc.

So many patients had the same eye reaction to the injection

Wow that's not good. Hope it gets reported to the relevant agency so batch number can be tracked to other clinics and recalled as necessary. Hope you're ok now .

Hello arwmd,

I am inclined to agree with 'eyesright'. It is likely that it is the Betadine eye wash which is iodine based.

Please see our factsheet about pain after injections at the following link;

You should promptly report any severe pain or discomfort after an injection to your eye clinic.

Best wishes

Agree with others hear who suggest iodine hypersensitivity, ask the clinician to dilute the scrub by 50% and do a double irrigation post injections. Eye drops for dry eye pre and post operative procedure is beneficial as well. Bon chance!

Every time. 24 hours of complete misery. Eyelea or Avistan it doesn't matter. It's not the injection it's the iodine! There are thousands of us who have an adverse reaction to it. You just have to read the all comments all over this site to see that. My doctor"s nurses are most unsympathetic but they are the key to alleviating some of the pain. Super prolonged washing afterwards will help.

What I don't understand is why there is no satisfactory alternative developed yet. Because if somebody did come up with a different formulation that worked as good, they would make a fortune because we would all want it!

Yes, I had a very sore eye for a couple of days after an eyelea injection which I didn't get with Lucentis injections.

Yes I have the same problem-a severe cornea abrasion develops about 90 minutes after either an Avastin or Eyelea injection. I am allergic to the Betadine prep. If the post inject wash is thorough and the betadine is diluted 50% (most ophthalmologists that I have encountered will not substitute chlorhexidine as suggested in another post), then the painful abrasion does not occur.

It is ridiculous that no adequate solution to these painful post injection procedure has not been developed. Patients are miserable for 24-36 hrs until the eye heals. Wash care and a consistent approach by the technician with each injection are essential to minimize the chances of the abrasion. The ophthalmologists seem to have little sympathy unfortunately (“goes with the territory”).

Yes yes yes the last injection I got I was in excruciating pain for 24 hours so I went to emergency they could do nothing, but the .doc did did say that the eye lid was terribly swollen, the next time I was at my doctors I told her about this she said your allergic to iodine, she sent a fax to the doc and I was there just on the 17 I reminded them no iodine they didn’t use any and OMG no pain,no pain ,no pain

Do what I did go to family doc, I had told the doc about the pain and he never suggested not using iodine all it took was a fax from doc saying I’m allergic to iodine I really think that’s what it was .

Yes. The last two times I have profuse discharges from my eyes and nose, swollen eyelids and enlarged painful bruising of the injured eye. It starts after 2 hours and I can not bear to open my eye for about 18 hours. My vision does not return to normal for several days. My blood pressure rose to 166. I have a photo, which I will send to the Society.

Last time I asked for Betadine to be used instead of 5% iodine, but it was not available. The mydriatic used was tropicamide as I am allergic to phenylephrine.
