Hi nipy,

I have very bad lower back pain and i'm learning to live with it. I take 1000mg of naproxen everyday and it still lingers. I have had it for about a year. I'm very careful with my posture, what I lift up and how I sleep. Sometimes, I get attacks where it's excruciating. I think the best thing is to keep moving as when I just stay still it worsens. I apply a heat pack to it, at home this is a hot water bottle and I always carry around the portable ones, you can get them from Pound land.(they last about a day).

Go and see your GP if the pain is unbearable.

Lower back pain is one of the major parts of my Lupus and has been since before I was diagnosed nearly 18 years ago. Most days painkillers will dull it a bit but it never goes and on bad days it's agony all the time. However my advice would be to learn to make the most of the good days and be careful on the bad. Try not to sit for too long at any time but don't try staying on your feet either. Heat pads , hot baths and electric blankets help to ease. But the, most important thing is to find ways of living with it so you take each day's ability in how you feel. Bad days rest more. Good days do things. It is a pain, but so are many things about Lupus. You can keep going and when you don't feel good, let off steam on here. Helen

I found the only thing that has helped my back pain is a kenalog injection the relief is amazing! I had severe back pain for a few years but my rheumatologist done the injection to 'see' if it would help as some people its effective and some not the same as most drugs. I had my infection straight into my back (you can feel it and its uncomfortable but not painful) the site where I had it was painfull for a few days but then I had total relief of the pain for about 6 months other than the odd copeable ache. I had the injection end of november last year and it is only now that the back pain is starting to get quite painful again, so will definately be asking for another injection in the near future. Good luck and take care x x

Definitely a big "me too" to all of these. Pacing is crucial - don't sit in one position too long or try to do too much in one go.

I found Pilates was also a big help. Start very gently - 10 minutes - just the warm up and first couple of exercises from a DVD is good - and gradually build up. Strengthening the core muscles helped me to do a lot more and hurt less.

I kept expecting an answer as to WHY my lower back hurt so much but all they can say is that it's part of the disease...

Good luck,

Jennie

My back hurts every day as well. I'm going for an MRI scan this week do you think it will show anything up, or are these aches and pains from the soft tissues? I'm not diagnosed yet and I'm worried this MRI won't show anything up and give the consultant more reason to tell me that there's nothing wrong with me!

I never knew lower back pain can be caused by LUPUS. This is such a fantastic site with a wealth of information & experience. Now I have to figure, is the cause lupus, spina bifida or BOTH! o_O

I had several sessions with the physio- no more back pain . The key thing for me is living a more healthy lifestyle - eat healthy and exercise. I guess i am lucky in that the Lupus was diagnosed early although it took a few years for the treatment to take effect. As a result no serious long term damage to report. You need to speak to your doctor about getting help with movement and diet especially if you are having serious problems. Lupus affects us all differently even though we have the same types of problems . We all have to learn to live with it- a positive outlook is the order of the day. Think about positive things or occupy yourself with a positive activity - whilst your not thinking about your Lupus you are not dwelling on it.

Hi ,

First thing you should know is that you can't just relieve back pain unless you know exact cause of pain , which can come from various reasons , after knowing cause, you should relieve it with way which is recommended for that cause, after you get rid of it, prevent it! I mean have healthy lifestyle and do everything healthy , for more detailed information you can check lower-rightback-pain.com

I have back problems and have had it for years. I’ve found one thing recently that works except medication. It’s called Posture right from lutaevono and does exactly that :)

Hi Nippy,

Not sure if this is a coincidence, I was seatching on the net sbout bacl pain and Health unlocked came up. I have severe back pain. I used to have occasional back, but this bad, I was difficult to shower and get dressed.

I been taking hot baths, putting heat on my back and pain killers nothing seems to be working. I am going to the doctors as it is so bad that I cannot work today.

As I have had Lupus issues lately, I think this is a flare up. I will see what the GP advises.

Reading your comments and the other comments gas helped. Thanks everyone. Tracy
